Ausubel started with great raw material: a factual family history, painstakingly researched over many years. Then came the dilemma: how to stay true to that raw material, yet create a story that shakes off the dust of history and becomes both immediate and dramatic. Not since Alex Haley's ''Roots'' have we seen such a rich tale of generations. It is not an easy feat, but Ausubel achieved his goal beautifully. Few of us know what our ancestors have actually said, but Ausubel's voices are surely representative of their lives and times. And that's as close to being there as we'll ever get. --June S. Neal, columnist and feature writer, Northeast Magazine/Hartford Courant, Hartford, CT
"I believe that The Other Guests presents an editor with the rare opportunity to be involved in the publication of a book that is so powerful in its message of humanism, that it cannot be ignored. I expect the book to become a classic, influencing generations far into the future."

"I have been in the publishing industry for decades and believe that I have a good nose for sensing a work that is not only of outstanding quality but one that will reach- and impact - a large audience i.e. one that will sell. Accordingly, I think you may very well have another Roots on your hands: a classic tome to be devoured by today's audience and generations to come."

"Your portrayal, thru imaginary dialog, of some of your family's ancestors accentuated your ability to be a wonderful and enthralling storyteller. I feel "Flower of God" will make a wonderful reading experience for many people - young, old, Jewish and non-Jewish.

About the Author
Dr. Herbert Ausubel comes from a family of writers and scientists and, as a child, lived in a three-generational household that connected the Old World with life in America. He trained as an historian before attending Harvard Medical School. He has had a distinguished career in medicine as a practicing physician, researcher, writer and lecturer. But always there was this second need: to tell the story of the Jewish people. To achieve that goal, he has spent the past thirty-two years meticulously researching and documenting six family lines of his children's ancestors, two of which he traced back 3,000 years to Biblical times.

Amazing history of one family!
By Nonfiction Lover
How many people can actually trace their families over a period of 3,000 years?! Extensively researched and beautifully written, "Flower of God" is the unique story of Dr. Herbert Ausubel's family. Dr. Ausubel, a New York oncologist, traces his family from the days of the Assyrian conquest of Israel to various parts of Europe, to their return to Israel, and to those who came to America. These Hebrew Children of the Book lived pious lives and raised wonderful, loving, productive families and, like the universal story of the Jews, were forced from their homes on many occasions under horribly destructive conditions. Some of these stories are harrowing and very memorable to the reader, as are many of Dr. Ausubel's relatives . I was in awe of the strength that his family displayed over the most trying circumstances. They were tested both spiritually and physically. Their story is one of survival, like the story of the Jewish people. It must've been fascinating to learn so much about one's family. Putting all of this information in a loving and readable manner is quite an accomplishment. I highly recommend this book to Jews and non-Jews alike. This is the spirit we humans are capable of. Congratulations to Dr. Ausubel on such a beautiful book.

Absolutely fabulous!!!
By Sheila Lucas
I already see this book as a classic. The HISTORY is unbelievable and the moral lessons it teaches are priceless.
It is, without a doubt, one of the top 5 books I have ever read. Right up there with "NIGHT"!
This book brings out emotional levels of sadness, happiness, despair, moral values and family tradition.
As usual the Jewish people keep God as primary in their lives. Their trust and deep beliefs in their religion are brought to the forefront.
Herbert Ausubel takes one on a journey through history, geography and religion in a comprehensive way that one can easily follow no matter what religion you adhere to.
Dr. Ausubel commands the English language to bring forth the deep dark secrets and wrenching sorrow of his family and many other Jewish families.
This is a must read for anyone who has an interest in mankind and who is willing to read the past and try to secure the future without repeating the hate, bigotry and prejudices that have so long haunted our societies.

Flower of God is a best seller, soon to be a motion picture.

Flower of Gods
Dr Ausubel has captured not only his family's personal history, but also that of uncountable Jewish families who were forced to flee from their homeland by inhuman power hungry people just as black people, my people, were forcibly removed from Africa and enslaved to build America. As an Afro-American, I could feel their fear, hunger, aches and pains; the unforgiving cold, unbearable travel conditions, smell the stench of waste in the boxcars that would take them to destination far form their homeland. The survivors then faced the unthinkable reality of family separation, long hard workdays and being subjected to extreme brutality, which had to be endured if one was to survive, for the species to survive. This is a riveting vivid account of his family's migration to America in search of freedom to be able to live and honor their God in peace.
Due to an unfortunate illness, I was fortunate to meet a man who introduced himself as Dr. Herbert Ausubel, a hematology/oncology specialist, whose hospital bedside manner was professional and overtly friendly. He advised me of my post operation care options in a non-medical, laymen's language that he, not knowing my background, I found interesting. However, this doctor was not like any other I had met before, he engaged me in conversation for about 50 minutes and only 10 of those were about my post operation care. Through conversation, I found Dr. Ausubel to be an interesting man who seemed to be well versed in many areas, which I later found was an understatement. I met Dr Ausubel in late April of 2009 and became an outpatient, well-wisher and a fan. Our conversations went everywhere for he is a very informed person with a contagious gift of gab of real life events, a zeal for life and love of people of all denominations, which is evident by his cliental.
Dr. Ausubel shared one of his passions, writing, with me and sent me 3-chapters of each manuscript from his trilogy, even though he was still putting some minor final changes to one manuscript, to read. This was Alex Healy's Roots! However, the characters, setting and logistics were changed. Normally, I would have skimmed the manuscripts chapters he emailed for I thought it was a little to much reading about a subject matter I did not have but a cursory knowledge in or curiosity about. Furthermore, it was truly not in the area of reading I would have normally picked up to engage. However, having Dr. Ausubel as my physician and knowing that I would see him weekly for at least the next 11-months, I decided to read, and read I did until I finished every word on every page longing to read more.
At my completion, I could not wait to tell Dr. Ausubel that he had just wrote a bestseller screenplay! It was a marvelous, captivating piece of work. Dr Ausubel is gifted not only as a medical doctor, but also as a seasoned writer. I found out later, he also has a regular radio show where he puts his gift of gab to good for the benefit of his ever growing and appreciative listing audience.
Dr. Ausubel must have been here before in another life to be able to create such elegant and vivid motion picture. His unique ability to unfold this heart felt story of his ancestors, a Jewish Family, and their struggles to survive against insurmountable odds. The movie masterfully details accounts of: family love and survival, their struggle, intrigue, adventure, the gayety of laughter, the ever lasting sorrow, beautiful sights in motion as they unfold, smells, and sounds as his historic family member endured cruelty, hunger, lack of shelter and harsh weather. This book is a best seller waiting for a producer to place in on film for audiences of all ethnicities to learn and enjoy.
His style of writing is that of the old radio mystery storytellers painting pictures with words; each page is filled with motion, array of colors, sounds, and smells. This is a must read for the Jewish people who, I believe, will have the greatest appreciation for this is their story too. However, my people who were brought here will appreciate and learn about a people not so different from ourselves. Moreover, those who have been, or still are, suppressed in other countries will draw strength and understanding from "Flower of God." Enjoy the movie; I cannot wait until the sequel is available!
