Brief Couples therapy Homework planner

This book an excellent tool for counselors involved in counseling couples. It has some great thought provoking assignments that the couple can do at home and then process in session. I feel that the homework presented in the planner will save the counselor time but also increase the counselor's knowledge of how to best help the couple.

Great workbook to use in couples therapy
By A. P. Owen
I am a therapist and have found the handouts and activities in this book to be very helpful in my work with couples. You will particularly like these handouts if you prefer solution-focused or strategic therapy. Some of the activities require the clients to commit for more than an hour or day, but if the clients will do them, they will find them helpful. I like how the activities help the clients stop doing "more of the same" and start making small changes to their interactions; it also helps them focus more on the positive things occurring in their relationships.

Brief Couples Therapy Homework Planner
By S. Grossi
I purchased this book with the Assignment's "disk" in August 2008. My computer is new technology and does not accomodate old technology, i.e. a diskette. I contacted the publisher John W. Wiley & Sons Inc., and requested they send a CD-ROM and they report that it has not been updated to CD-ROM as yet. I am appauled that they are selling old technology with their books! I expect to receive the new CD as soon as it is updated. Get with the times, guys. It's the 21st Century!!

1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created, by Charles C. Mann

A deeply engaging new history of how European settlements in the post-Colombian Americas shaped the world, from the bestselling author of 1491.

Presenting the latest research by biologists, anthropologists, archaeologists, and historians, Mann shows how the post-Columbian network of ecological and economic exchange fostered the rise of Europe, devastated imperial China, convulsed Africa, and for two centuries made Mexico City—where Asia, Europe, and the new frontier of the Americas dynamically interacted—the center of the world. In this history, Mann uncovers the germ of today's fiercest political disputes, from immigration to trade policy to culture wars. In 1493, Mann has again given readers an eye-opening scientific interpretation of our past, unequaled in its authority and fascination.

Amazon.com Review
Guest Reviewer: Nathaniel Philbrick on 1493 by Charles C. Mann
Nathaniel Philbrick is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Last Stand; In the Heart of the Sea, which won the National Book Award; Sea of Glory, winner of the Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt Naval History Prize; and Mayflower, which was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history and one of the New York Times' ten best books of the year. He has lived on Nantucket since 1986.

I’m a big fan of Charles Mann’s previous book 1491, in which he provides a sweeping and provocative examination of North and South America prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus. It’s exhaustively researched but so wonderfully written that it’s anything but exhausting to read.

With his follow-up, 1493, Mann has taken it to a new, truly global level. Building on the groundbreaking work of Alfred Crosby (author of The Columbian Exchange and, I’m proud to say, a fellow Nantucketer), Mann has written nothing less than the story of our world: how a planet of what were once several autonomous continents is quickly becoming a single, “globalized” entity.

Mann not only talked to countless scientists and researchers; he visited the places he writes about, and as a consequence, the book has a marvelously wide-ranging yet personal feel as we follow Mann from one far-flung corner of the world to the next. And always, the prose is masterful. In telling the improbable story of how Spanish and Chinese cultures collided in the Philippines in the sixteenth century, he takes us to the island of Mindoro whose “southern coast consists of a number of small bays, one next to another like tooth marks in an apple.”

We learn how the spread of malaria, the potato, tobacco, guano, rubber plants, and sugar cane have disrupted and convulsed the planet and will continue to do so until we are finally living on one integrated or at least close-to-integrated Earth. Whether or not the human instigators of all this remarkable change will survive the process they helped to initiate more than five hundred years ago remains, Mann suggests in this monumental and revelatory book, an open question.

A Letter from Charles C. Mann

It looked an ice cream cone. But when I came closer, I realized that the boy was eating a raw sweet potato. His father had whittled at the top to expose the orange flesh, which the boy was licking; the unpeeled bottom of the sweet potato served as a handle.

This was at a farm about 300 miles northwest of Shanghai. Sweet potatoes are often eaten raw in rural China--a curiosity to Westerners like me. I didn’t realize that I had been staring until the boy ran to seek the protection of his father, who was hoeing a row of sweet potatoes. The father glared at me as I waved an apology. Because I don’t speak Chinese, I couldn’t tell him that I had been staring not at his son, but at the sweet potato in his hand. Nor could I say that I was staring because the sweet potato was an emblem of four hundred years of convulsive global change.

Sweet potatoes are native to Central America. Spanish ships carried them to Manila in the 1570s, and then a Chinese ship captain smuggled the vines past Spanish customs by wrapping them around ropes and coiling the ropes in a basket. He took the contraband plants to Fujian, in southeast China, across from Taiwan. It was a time of famine in China. The captain’s son took the sweet potatoes to the governor of Fujian, who in turn ordered farmers to plant the fanshu (foreign tubers). The famine ended. Other regions took up sweet potatoes to solve their food problems. Millions of lives were saved. For three centuries the food of the Chinese poor was not rice but sweet potato.

How did that Chinese kid get his sweet potato? Christopher Columbus. Scientists view Columbus as the man who inadvertently began an explosive global biological swap. After he established contact between the eastern and western hemisphere, thousands of plant and animal species ricocheted around the continents. It was the biggest event in the history of life since the death of the dinosaurs. The Columbian Exchange, as historians call it, is why there are tomatoes in Italy, oranges in the United States, potatoes in Ireland, chili peppers in Thailand--and sweet potatoes in China.

It also is a big part of the reason why the British lost the Revolutionary War, why Mexico City became the world’s first truly international city, and why millions of African slaves were transported unwillingly across the Atlantic. Indeed, these are among the subjects of my book, which is largely about the Columbian Exchange.

The sweet potato--along with another American import, corn--did help save China from the calamity of famine. But they also caused another calamity. Traditional Chinese agriculture focused on rice, which had to be grown in wet river valleys. Sweet potatoes and corn could be grown in China’s dry highlands. Armies of farmers went out and cleared the forests on these highlands. The result was catastrophic erosion. Silt filled the Yangzi and Huang He (Yellow) rivers, setting off huge floods that killed millions of people. It was like one Katrina after another, a Chinese scientist told me. Beset by disaster, China fell behind in the race for global supremacy.

All of this history was encapsulated in the boy and his sweet potato, though he didn’t know it. To him, it was just a snack. When I took out my camera, the boy’s father rolled his eyes in disbelief. But I was taking a picture of centuries of global turbulence. The boy pouted; I clicked the shutter.

Timeline for 1493 200,000,000 B.C.: Geological forces begin to break up the world’s single giant continent, Pangaea, forever separating the hemispheres. After this, Eurasia and the Americas develop completely different suites of plants and animals. 1493 A.D.: Columbus sails on second voyage, establishing the first consequential European settlement in the Americas. Without intending to, he ends the long separation of the hemispheres—and sets off the ecological convulsion known as the Columbian Exchange. 1518: In the first environmental calamity of the modern era, accidentally imported African scale insects in Hispaniola lead to an explosion of fire ants. Spaniards flee the ant-infested island in droves; colonists in Santo Domingo hold procession in honor of St. Saturninus, praying for his aid against the insect plague. 1545: Spaniards discover the world’s biggest silver strike in Bolivia. In the next century, the world’s supply of this precious metal will more than double, giving Europe an economic edge that will help it colonize Africa, Asia and the Americas. 1549: Initial appearance of tobacco—the addictive American drug that becomes the first global commodity craze—in China. That same year, Hernán Cortés inaugurates the human part of the Columbian Exchange by signing the first contract to import large numbers of Africans to the American mainland. 1571: Miguel López de Legazpi colonizes Manila and establishes continual trade with China—Columbus’s life-long, never-fulfilled dream. Knitting the entire inhabited planet into a single web of trade, Legazpi’s actions are the beginning of today’s economic globalization. ~1615: Earthworms come to northern North America in English ship ballast. During the next three centuries, they will re-engineer forests from Ohio Valley to Hudson Bay. 1630-60: The gush of American silver finally causes its price to collapse, setting off a the world’s first global economic calamity. 1644: Collapse of Ming dynasty. Long struggle between remaining Ming in south and incoming Qing dynasty in north leads the latter to forcibly evacuate most of the southern coast; millions of dispossessed people pour into the mountains, where they grow maize and sweet potatoes, American crops first smuggled into China from Manila and other European bases. 1775: France’s Flour War, set off by high bread prices, persuades King Louis XVI to allow the pioneering nutritional chemist Antoine-Augustin Parmentier to stage a series of publicity stunts to persuade farmers to grow potatoes, a distrusted foreign species from Peru. Parmentier’s PR is so successful that broad swathes of northern Europe are soon covered with a monoculture of potatoes. 1781: Britain’s “southern strategy” pushes Gen. Cornwallis’s army into North America’s malaria zone, an area dominated by malaria parasites introduced from Europe and Africa. Defeated by malaria, the British army surrenders to a general it never fought: George Washington. This ends the Revolutionary War. 1845: Europe’s potato monoculture, which is unlike anything ever seen in Peru, turns out to be especially vulnerable to another Peruvian import, the potato blight. Ravaging the continent from Russia to Ireland, the blight causes a famine that kills an estimated two million people, half of them in Ireland. ~1867: Léopold Trouvelot, French amateur entomologist, smuggles gypsy moths to Medford, Mass., hoping to breed them with native silk-producing moths to produce a more robust silk-producer. Their almost immediate escape sets off an invasion that continues today. Trouvelot hurriedly returns to France before the dimensions of the problem can be known. 1880-1912: Industrializing nations, desperate for the elastic belts, pliable gaskets and the aborbent tires needed by steam engines and vehicles, buy every scrap of rubber they can get from the Amazon’s rubber trees, the sole source of high-quality latex. The ensuing rubber boom collapses after an Englishman smuggles rubber trees out of Brazil. Soon much of southeast Asia is covered with this foreign tree. 1979: The golden apple snail is sent from Brazil to Taiwan to launch an escargot industry there. It escapes, proliferates, and becomes a major menace to the island’s rice crop.

"Fascinating. . . . Lively. . . . A convincing explanation of why our world is the way it is."
—The New York Times Book Review

"Even the wisest readers will find many surprises here. . . . Like 1491, Mann's sequel will change worldviews."
—San Francisco Chronicle

"Exemplary in its union of meaningful fact with good storytelling, 1493 ranges across continents and centuries to explain how the world we inhabit came to be."
—The Washington Post

“Engaging . . . Mann deftly illuminates contradictions on a human scale: the blind violence and terror at Jamestown, the cruel exploitation of labor in the silver mines of Bolivia, the awe felt by Europeans upon first seeing a rubber ball bounce.”
—The New Yorker

“Revelatory.”
—Lev Grossman, Time Magazine

“Compelling and eye-opening.”
—Publishers Weekly Top 100 Books of 2011

“A book to celebrate. . . A bracingly persuasive counternarrative to the prevailing mythology about the historical significance of the ‘discovery’ of America. . . 1493 is rich in detail, analytically expansive and impossible to summarize. . . [Mann’s book] deserves a prominent place among that very rare class of books that can make a difference in how we see the world, although it is neither a polemic nor a work of advocacy. Thoughtful, learned and respectful of its subject matter, 1493 is a splendid achievement.”
—The Oregonian

“Despite his scope, Mann remains grounded in fascinating details. . . . Such technical insights enhance a very human story, told in lively and accessible prose.”
—Cleveland Plain-Dealer

“Mann’s excitement never flags as he tells his breathtaking story. . . There is grandeur in this view of the past that looks afresh at the different parts of the world and the parts each played in shaping it.”
—Financial Times

“A muscular, densely documented follow-up [to Mann’s 1491]. . . Like its predecessor, 1493 runs to more than 400 pages, but it moves at a gallop. . . As a historian Mann should be admired not just for his broad scope and restless intelligence but for his biological sensitivity. At every point of his tale he keeps foremost in his mind the effect of humans’ activities on the broader environment they inhabit.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“Evenhandedness, a sense of wonder, the gift of turning a phrase. . . Mann loves the world and adopts it as his own.”
—Science

“Charles C. Mann glories in reality, immersing his reader in complexity. . . . The worn clichés crumble as readers gain introductions to the freshest of the systems of analysis gendered in the first post-Columbian millennium.”
—Alfred W. Crosby, author of The Columbian Exchange

“In the wake of his groundbreaking book 1491 Charles Mann has once again produced a brilliant and riveting work that will forever change the way we see the world. Mann shows how the ecological collision of Europe and the Americas transformed virtually every aspect of human history. Beautifully written, and packed with startling research, 1493 is a monumental achievement."
—David Grann, author of The Lost City of Z

“[1493] is readable and well-written, based on his usual broad research, travels and interviews. A fascinating and important topic, admirably told.”
—John Hemming, author of Tree of Rivers

“Fascinating. . . Convincing. . . A spellbinding account of how an unplanned collision of unfamiliar animals, vegetables, minerals and diseases produced unforeseen wealth, misery, social upheaval and the modern world.”
—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“A fascinating survey. . . A lucid historical panorama that’s studded with entertaining studies of Chinese pirate fleets, courtly tobacco rituals, and the bloody feud between Jamestown colonists and the Indians who fed and fought them, to name a few. Brilliantly assembling colorful details into big-picture insights, Mann’s fresh challenge to Eurocentric histories puts interdependence at the origin of modernity.”
—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“Charles Mann expertly shows how the complex, interconnected ecological and economic consequences of the European discovery of the Americas shaped many unexpected aspects of the modern world. This is an example of the best kind of history book: one that changes the way you look at the world, even as it informs and entertains.”
—Tom Standage, author of A History of the World in Six Glasses

“A landmark book. . . Entrancingly provocative, 1493 bristles with illuminations, insights and surprises.”
—Shelf Awareness

“Fascinating. . . Engaging and well-written. . . Information and insight abound on every page. This dazzling display of erudition, theory and insight will help readers to view history in a fresh way.”
—BookPage

“Spirited. . . One thing is indisputable: Mann is definitely global in his outlook and tribal in his thinking. . . Mann’s taxonomy of the ecological, political, religious, economic, anthropological and mystical melds together in an intriguing whole cloth.”
—The Star-Ledger

“Mann has managed the difficult trick of telling a complicated story in engaging and clear prose while refusing to reduce its ambiguities to slogans. He is not a professional historian, but most professionals could learn a lot from the deft way he does this. . . 1493 is thoroughly researched and up-to-date, combining scholarship from fields as varied as world history, immunology, and economics, but Mann wears his learning lightly. He serves up one arresting detail after another, always in vivid language. Most impressive of all, he manages to turn plants, germs, insects and excrement into the lead actors in his drama while still parading before us an unforgettable cast of human characters. He makes even the most unpromising-sounding subjects fascinating. I, for one, will never look at a piece of rubber in quite the same way now. . . The Columbian Exchange has shaped everything about the modern world. It brought us the plants we tend in our gardens and the pests that eat them. And as it accelerates in the 21st century, it may take both away again. If you want to understand why, read 1493.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Mann is trying to do much more than punch holes in conventional wisdom; he’s trying to piece together an elaborate, alternative history that describes profound changes in the world since the original voyage of Columbus. What's most surprising is that he manages to do this in such an engaging way. He writes with an incredibly dry wit.”
—Austin American-Statesman

“Mann’s book is jammed with facts and factoids, trivia and moments of great insight that take on power as they accumulate.”
—The Washington Post

“Although many have written about the impact of Europeans on the New World, few have told the worldwide story in a manner accessible to lay readers as effectively as Mann does here.”
—Library Journal

“The chief strength of Mann’s richly associative books lies in their ability to reveal new patterns among seemingly disparate pieces of accepted knowledge. They’re stuffed with forehead-slapping ‘aha’ moments. . . If Mann were to work his way methodically through the odd-numbered years of history, he could be expected to publish a book about the global impact of the Great Recession sometime in the middle of the next millennium. If it’s as good as 1493, it would be worth the wait.”
—Richmond Times-Dispatch

“None of us could travel with Columbus in 1492. But that’s OK, because in 1493 we can take an even more exhilarating ride. This powerful rethinking of the origins and consequences of globalization is so illuminating, it’s scary.”
—Carl Safina, author of A Sea In Flames and The View From Lazy Point

“Almost mind-boggling in its scope, enthusiasm and erudition. . . Almost every page of 1493 contains some extraordinarily provocative argument or arrestingly bizarre detail. . . Ranging freely across time and space, Mann’s book is full of compelling stories. . . A tremendously provocative, learned and surprising read.”
—The Times of London

Great Reading, Mind Opening
By Anne Mills
This is a terrifically interesting and entertaining book, which presented me with at least two blockbuster ideas that changed the way I think about the past. I'll get to those in a minute, but first a few general points. Charles Mann is a science journalist:who seems to specialize in BIG topics. His 2005 book ("1491", which argues that the pre-Columbian population of the Americas was much larger and more sophisticated than generally assumed), was very well received. I enjoyed it so much, and thought it so valuable a book, that I was very anxious to read "1493".

"1493" lived up to my (high) expectations. Mann is remarkable writer, with an extraordinary ability to present very complex facts and ideas in way that's not just accessible to the lay reader, it's fun for the lay reader. This isn't to say that the book isn't carefully researched -- the text is followed by almost 100 pages of footnotes, and throughout he cites and acknowledges the scientists and others from whom he has drawn information. It's just that Mann manages to combine a myriad of facts and hypotheses into a compelling narrative. And he often puts this in very concrete terms, focussing on individual people, commodities or events. It adds up to a fascinating read.

It is also a very important one, with implications for the future as well as about the past. Mann's subject in this book is the Columbian Exchange, the sudden movement of plants, microbes, animals and people between the eastern and western hemispheres after Columbus' voyage to the Americas in 1492. A well known effect of this was the eastern hemisphere adoption of western hemisphere foods (tomatoes, potatoes, chocolate, coffee, and on and on). Another effect that's only been recently come to be widely understood is the devastating impact on the pre-Columbian population of the Americas; as many as 80% died in the epidemics that followed the introduction of diseases to which they had no immunity. But the population die-off and the exchange of plant species are not the only effects of the Columbian Exchange. Mann's book explores the myriad ways in which the Exchange -- globablization -- has shaped the world of today.

Two things I learned from the book struck me particularly. First, like most Americans of my generation (older) I learned in school that the colonization of the Americas was carried out by white people, who moved into a largely uninhabited continent. "1491" took care of the uninhabited: "1493" takes care of the white. Mann says that from 1500 to 1840, about 3.4 million white Europeans emigrated to the Americas. Over the same period, about 11.7 million captive Africans were sent to the Americas. Except for New England, much of the United States and most of Latin American was far more black than white. (And probably in 1840 still more Indian/Native American than anything else). The racial balance changed as white immigration ramped up and as millions upon millions of blacks died too young, but the picture of early America looks very different to me now.

Secondly, Mann discussed at length the 19th century ecological disaster that engulfed China. I had always assumed that the floods that killed so many millions in China had always happened, and were the result of geography. There have indeed always been floods, but their severity and human cost grew logarithmically in the 19th century. New crops led to more food and to rising population growth, and at the same time to more potential cash crops, increasing the pressure on existing land holdings, and leading to vast land clearances. That made the floods far worse when they came, undermining the political structure and compounding China's problems. This was interesting not just a light on the past, but as a warning signal for the future.

The review is already too long, so, to sum it up: Great book!! Read it!! Give it to friends and family!!

Worth Reading
By Jeff A. Grenz
It is rare that an author has the talent to impart facts, attendant theories, and well researched history without putting his readers to sleep; Charles C. Mann is such an author and "1493" is such a book.

Taking up where his earlier work, "1491", left off, Mann's continued historical explanation and analysis of the so called "Columbian Exchange" does much to inform his reader of when and how human caused globalization began to impact the western hemisphere and change Earth's ecosystems forever after. The exchange of plants, animals, viruses, bacteria, minerals and, perhaps most earth-shaking, human beings falls into an epoch that Mann labels the "Homogenocene", an era that continues to affect our world and its environments. This book - like 1491 - is well researched, well argued when Mann tilts toward theories of causation, and very well written overall. Two thumbs up! Or five stars even!

Rise of the Homogenocene
By Thomas J. Elpel
After his best-selling book, 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus, Charles Mann wrote a sequel, 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created.

1491 reconstructs what North and South America were like before European contact, showing that the Americas were among the most densely populated regions of the world. Some of the cities in Mesoamerica and South America were bigger and more sophisticated than Europe’s most advanced cities at the time.

1493 chronicles global changes resulting from the interaction between continents, what Mann calls the Homogenocene, rewriting global ecosystems through the transportation of immigrants, slaves, new crop plants, livestock, pests, and diseases. Mann shows how malaria imported from Africa shaped colonies and influenced slavery in the New World, and how African colonization was often a bigger force in reshaping the Americas than European colonization. He shows how exploited riches of gold and silver sparked global trade networks and enriched some, but also flooded the markets with such vast wealth as to devalue precious metals and cause economic collapse instead of prosperity. Mann follows the trail of American crops that were introduced to the rest of the world, such as potatoes, tomatoes, maize, sweet potatoes, and rubber, showing how American foods helped stabilize and grow European populations, fueling global empire-building, and of course, crashes such as the Irish potato famine. From Asia to the Americas to Europe, Mann demonstrates how the discovery of the Americas reshaped the entire world, for better or worse, into a more homogenous mix of people, crops, and pests. It is a great read for understanding world history and the roots of globalization.

Review

The organization of the book allows it to be assigned in parts or as a whole. This is perfect for an undergraduate course … Opdycke’s demonstration of Addams personal transformation and focus beyond local reform activities provides a better understanding of the importance of progressive ideals to modern America … I was truly impressed with Opdycke’s ability to make this more than just a traditional biography that explains Addams life and activities.

 -Charissa Threat, Northeastern University

…perfect for a survey course because the author uses Addams and her experiences to illuminate the major political, social, and economic trends and events that defined the decades between 1880 and 1920. The book utilizes Addams and her story as a window to the American story.

Addams' Inspiring Journey
By AmazonAddict
If you would have mentioned the name “Jane Addams” three weeks ago, my response would’ve been a confused, “What?” After reading her biography by Sandra Opdycke, I ask myself, “What not?”

Addams, often regarded as the mother of social work, did everything; from founding one of the first settlement houses in the U.S. - Hull-House - and empowering women globally to her international attempts to bring peace, she contributed to many major social issues. And although she had experienced personal failure and tragedy earlier in life, she later succeeded in helping herself, her neighbors, and the world.

The work of Jean-Jacques Rousseau is presented in two volumes, which together form the most comprehensive anthology of Rousseau's political writings in English. Volume I contains the earlier writings such as the First and Second Discourses. The American and French Revolutions were profoundly affected by Rousseau's writing, thus illustrating the scope of his influence. Volume II contains the later writings such as the Social Contract. The Social Contract was publicly condemned on publication causing Rousseau to flee. In exile he wrote both autobiographical and political works. These volumes contain comprehensive introductions, chronologies, and guides to further reading, and will enable students to fully understand the writings of one of the world's greatest thinkers.

Review of Cambridge's Rousseau, Volume One
By Ryan Mease
This is a solid translation. It contains the two critical dialogues of Rousseau's early career, as well as other minor works that reveal more corner of Rousseau's ever-interesting imagination. Furthermore, the work is supplemented by a great introduction, both on the themes of the work and on its terminology. Indeed, the volume contains a sort of glossary before the translations, speaking to each of the most important words within these works. One complaint: I don't like the physical, material aspect of this translation (or Cambridge in general). These sharp blue books have a tough and unyielding 'soft'cover, which really makes holding the book open difficult.

Great translation of Rousseau!

This is the best translation of Rousseau that I have ever read. The translation for this series genuinely reflects Rousseau's humor and sarcasm, making the political philosophy a joy to read. Highly recommend this series!

By Amazon Customer
I received a ARC of this book for an honest review.

This is the story of Karissa Larke who has lost her brother to a failed kidnapping and mother to suicide, both in a short amount of time. The book takes place in 2051 and Karissa is 21 and has an issue with social anxiety she was kept in home schooling till she was 15. She was given a personal security android for protection, she finds that she only feels safe with him which doesn't help with breaking out of her shell. This is the story of a young woman and her robot Adrian and the bonds and life that they have with the other.

I give this a four star rating. That was not an easy choice for me for the fact that this was not a topic I would choose to read everyday. I was very unsure when I started to read if I was even going to like it. D.S. did it again she told a story that you can feel yourself falling in love with the characters. It shocked me in a way I wasn't sure how to react to, but yet I go back to what I just said about loving the characters and that made any shocking moments ok.

I really like the way that D.S. opens your eyes to a new world with every book, and his is no exception. Her writing style is something that I enjoy. I feel like a lot of books that I read are basically the same maybe different place and name but I find myself really into D.S. books because they have that little something extra.

I hope that you will give this book a chance, it will definitely take you on a very interesting ride.

Different...good read
By Ms Geni
This is my first robot romance. Adrian had been a bodyguard of Karissa's for six years. Her father created him and assigned him to her. Suddenly, their relationship changes when she realizes that he is more to her than an android bodyguard. Adrian is so cute with his jealousy. It's really quite human. I thought this book was very different. It is told from Karissa's POV. It was quietly intense. Fascinating to see how feelings can develop between someone born and someone created. He takes such good care of her, in every way. I'm sure many who read this will want him too! I remember looking down at 82% and thinking...what? It's almost done? I was that interested!

I loved it!
By AR
I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review... but let me begin by saying I've already bought the print version! (Yes, I'm old school like that, what can I say? When I find a book I know I want to read again, I like to have it in good ol' paperback. ;) )

This is absolutely my favorite book from D.S. Wrights so far! I admit, I'm a sucker for robots/androids and I've been looking forward to this story since it was announced but I really fell in love with Adrian! This is Kara's story but it's Adrian's circuit heart that powers it as he explores what makes us human. When is love an emotion and not just a programmed response?

But, as I said, this is Kara's story and, from her p.o.v., we follow her on her own journey as she attempts to overcome the nearly crippling fears and anxieties that grew from a pair of tragedies in her past. It was very easy to relate to her and her stress and insecurities felt natural and understandable, never melodramatic or overdone.

The supporting characters were also enjoyable. I honestly thought I had Connor pegged from the moment he waltzed in and was prepared to thoroughly dislike him and then ended up loving him!

As I've said before, I really enjoy this author's unique and interesting voice and I would love to see this universe expanded up in future stories as other androids make their way into the world. And I certainly wouldn't mind spending more time with Kara and Adrian!

Why We Teach Now, by Sonia Nieto

This book dares to challenge current notions of what it means to be a ''highly qualified teacher'' la No Child Left Behind, and demonstrates the depth of commitment and care teachers bring to their work with students, families, and communities. This sequel to Nieto's popular book, Why We Teach, features powerful stories of classroom teachers from across the country as they give witness to their hopes and struggles to teach our nation's children. Why We Teach Now offers us the voices of teachers like 42-year veteran Mary Ginley, who wonders, ''Why would anyone with any brains and imagination ever want to be a teacher?'' Who then answers her own question affirmatively, ''It's because somehow, even today, even with all the insanity, all the rules, all the poorly designed textbooks, all the directives to teach to the test, there are kids out there who need good teachers.''

I thought I would not like nor keep this textbook. The stories in it are actually very fascinating and a joy to read. As a new teacher, I have learned a lot through reading the stories from all the different teachers. I had to buy this for my graduate program, but it was totally worth the purchase. It is such an interesting book. I use it all the time in essays, even when its not required to refer to it I still do.

From the Back Cover

"Remember Me."

These are the words carved on the dead body of a local judge's assistant . . . the very local judge who Wick Tate is investigating as part of her undercover hacking for her not-exactly-favorite cop, Detective Carson.

Wick had thought her troubles were over.

But she should've known better.

Now she's embroiled in the "Remember Me" murder case, which doesn't stop at one body. Plus, she's got the threat of her imprisoned dad and his cronies hanging over her head, the fragile shell of a family to keep together, and new evidence surrounding her mother's suicide to dig through.

She also has to find a balance between trying to be the "good" person her boyfriend, Griff, thinks she is and the "vengeful warrior girl" her new hacker friend, Milo, thinks she's meant to be.

The pressure might be too much, as secrets—including Wick's own—climb to the surface.

Wick has persevered before. But can she do it again?

About the Author

Romily Bernard graduated from Georgia State University with a literature degree. Since then, she's worked as a riding instructor, cell phone salesgirl, personal assistant, horse groom and exercise rider, accounting assistant, and, during a very dark time, a customer service representative. Romily currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia. Her first novel, Find Me, placed first in the YA Unpublished Maggie Awards (given by Georgia Romance Writers) and won the Golden Heart Award for Best YA Romance from the Romance Writers of America.

Official Summary:

In the sequel to Find Me, Wick Tate, sarcastic teen hacker, is back and once again dealing with criminals and corrupt cops…and a brooding new love interest. Will Wick persevere when some secrets refuse to stay hidden?

Wick had thought her troubles were over.

But she should’ve known better.

Not only is she embroiled in a new murder case, which starts with a body with “Remember Me” carved into it and doesn’t stop there, but she also discovers new evidence surrounding her mother’s suicide…which leads her right back to her imprisoned deadbeat dad. And she has to deal with her flirty new hacker friend, Milo, sniffing around—which her boyfriend, Griff, isn’t too happy about.

The pressure might be too much as secrets—including Wick’s own—climb to the surface.

Remember Me is an edge-of-your-seat thrilling read that’ll have readers turning the pages at lightning speed! The paperback of Find Me is on sale simultaneously, and a digital original novella from Romily, featuring Griff, is on sale just a few weeks before!

What I Liked:

I have to be honest - I don't remember very much of book one. Not because it was bad or anything - I was on the blog tour for Find Me a year ago... a year is a long time for forget lots of things. Around this time last year, I was acclimatizing to my freshman year of college, falling for a boy whom I knew would break my heart, getting ready for midterms... so honestly, I didn't really remember much from the first book. And I thought the first book was a standalone, so I was really content with the ending, and didn't really commit details to memory.

Nevertheless, Bernard made it really easy for me to read this one with no trouble. It was totally okay that I didn't recall details from book one - I remembered the gist of things, but most names and events went over my head. Bernard introduced and reintroduced information in a way that I found helpful, with all the holes in my brain.

Wick thought she was finished with Carson and his work for her. But he blackmails her, and she starts working for him, on a new and dangerous project. Murders pile up, and Wick discovers new details about her mother's death, and Griff is pulling away from her, and everything is supposed to be great but nothing is.

The beginning of this one was slow. I remember I was at like, 18%, and thought I was much farther in than that. But after that, things really pick up. I found myself interested in Wick's mother's death, and in Milo. Those two "things" kept my interest in this book. I knew there was more to the mother's death than a suicide.

So this book balances many things - Wick's work for Carson, Wick's discovery of information on her mother's death, Wick's relationship with her adoptive mother, Bren, with Griff, with Milo. These relationships are confusing, not clear-cut at all. I love that Bernard crafted this book not only into a thriller, but a novel that explored relationships and the "real" things of life.

I also really liked how Bernard crafted Wick psychologically. Wick really is damaged, but she doesn't want to see herself as that way. She doesn't want Griff or Lily or Bren to look at her as tainted or evil or damaged. She doesn't like being dependent on anyone, but she'd rather be dependent on Carson because at least he can protect the ones she loves. At least she can do the work he wants with ease. Supposedly.

The story has high stakes, danger, murder, threats, anguish. I was literally on the edge of my bed in some scenes, like when Wick was breaking into the judge's office, or when Baines was in the house with Wick and the neighbor intervened. Bernard really made my heart pound!

The romance... well, I'm not entirely sure what to say about the romance. At first, I thought this series was a duology. So I thought that the direction that the author took the romance was weird, and rushed. But then I saw that there will be another book, and all was right in the book.

So here's the thing: there is a sort-of love triangle in this book. BUT HOLD ON. I actually think it works in this case. Griff loves Wick, Wick loves Griff, but the thing is... them drifting apart, it totally feels natural, like it was supposed to happen. They are SO DIFFERENT. Griff does not understand. Don't get me wrong, I like him a lot, and I totally ship them... but I ship Wick and Milo more.

Nothing really romantic happens between Wick and Milo. But it's there. And honestly, I'm feeling that relationship more than Griff and Wick, at this point. I don't know what the author will do, and it won't be the end of the world either way (I like both boys, and I know that Wick doesn't know what she wants in general, so I don't really care).

When I read this book, I had no idea that there would be a book three. I went on Goodreads and saw an entry for a "Trust Me"... I'm really excited about this. The author ended the epilogue of this book very dramatically. I cannot wait!!

What I Did Not Like:

I mentioned that the beginning was boring - it really was though. I was thinking, darn, this is a tour book, I can't just set it aside until I'm in the mood. But the book god better as it went along. So, a word of caution. The story dragged a lot in the beginning - just keep going!

Would I Recommend It:

If you like high-stakes thrillers, then this series in general is definitely a good one! I'm glad I decided to join the tour for this book (I wasn't intending on doing so - I was completely content with just reading book one and moving on with life).

Rating:

4 stars. I wasn't dying to read this book, but now that I've read it, I cannot wait to read book three!!

A GREAT series! And I'm glad it's just getting started!
By Ashley Bodette
Alright, y'all...there MUST be a third book in this series, because where this one left off?! I am feeling very unsettled! (Of course, I mean that in the best way!) *digs on goodreads* *finds next book will be available in a year* *sighs in relief*

If I thought that Find Me had me on the edge of my seat, and turning pages...it has NOTHING on Remember Me! Dirty cops, dirty judges, jealous boyfriends, new boys who understand you in a way no one else does...let's just say in the 24 hours it took me to read this, my mind was exploding over, and over, and over again. I didn't know what I wanted for Wicket. I mean, I love Griff. But I understand why she wonders if he will ever love her for exactly who she is, rather than what he wishes she would be. And Milo is totally adorable, in a schmexy, don't-know-if-he's-a-good-guy-or-bad-guy, kind of way. I felt so bad for her, and like I said before, even now, at the end of the novel, I'm not sure what I want for her...what should she do now? Who should she be with? Should she be with anybody?

And then there's FREAKING Carson...I've never really liked him, but I wanted to put him in a choke hold most of the novel. And really, he's not much better than the new bad guys in this story. And believe me, you won't see them coming. But I don't want to spoil any of the story for you, so I'll just leave it at that!

An intense, suspenseful sequel
By Meredith @ Pandora's Books
Remember Me was an epic, intense and suspenseful read. My heart was in my throat for at least half of the book, if not more. I absolutely loved Find Me – it was one of my favorite reads of 2013! And to have the sequel surpass it in awesomeness? That’s impressive! I definitely didn’t notice any Second Book Syndrome in Remember Me!

Wick hasn’t changed much since Find Me, character-wise. I mean, she has new fears and nightmares from what happened at the end of Find Me and she’s been pulled in even deeper by Carson. But otherwise, she’s still skeptical of everything and everyone and completely untrusting. She’s still protective of Lily and wary of Bren and her affections. She’s still confused about how she feels about her dad, still misses her mom – and still keeps Griff at a metaphorical distance. But in Remember Me, Wick becomes very stubborn and slightly paranoid. She worked alone before Griff, but has since come to rely on him a lot. Yet she pushes him away in Remember Me, refusing to confide in him or ask for help. I really wanted to shake some sense into her at times!

As for Griff himself.. Griff frustrated me. I really loved him in Find Me, but he was very stubborn and childish and annoying in Remember Me. He should have been supporting Wick, not pushing her away or condemning her for her lifestyle. She had her reasons for doing the things she did and if he trusted and loved her as much as he claimed, he should have been more supportive or pushed to help more. And what he did in the end? It broke my heart, but you know what? Good riddance!

Now Milo.. Milo I liked! He was kind of odd in the beginning and his awe at meeting Wick was borderline creepy worship. But the more we get to know him – and the more he and Wick get to know each other – the more he grows on you. He’s loyal, smart and has the connections necessary for Wick to do what she needs to do. He’s almost like a male version of Wick. They get each other, they understand what’s at stake in their line of work and they work well together. I still don’t completely trust Milo yet, though..

The whole Carson story line was really starting to bug me. I think it was one of my biggest issues. I despise dirty cops and he was the lowest of the low, scum and a pain in the butt! I think, deep down, he thought what he was doing would help the greater good, but he sure went about it the wrong way. I think if he’d been nicer to Wick, they could have been an epic team. I’m not sure he deserved what happened to him in the end, though he really did deserve to get knocked down a few pegs. I guess we’ll see where his story goes in the third book – I have a feeling Carson is going to end up being the lesser of the two evils…

Bren and Lily really made me angry in this book. Like, I would have thrown it if I had the physical copy of the book. As it was, I was reading on my iPad and I figured throwing that wasn’t a good idea. But wow.. At one point, roughly half-way into the book, Bren said some things and I just… I flipped out. I wanted to punch her so badly, more than I’ve ever wanted to punch anyone in my life – real or fictional!!! I couldn’t believe the words coming out of her mouth! And Lily.. I know she’s young and she just wants a family and a normal life, but WICK IS YOUR SISTER! STOP TREATING HER LIKE CRAP, YOU LITTLE BRAT! I mean, really. The things she said to Wick were so cruel.. And Bren and Lily were two characters I REALLY loved in Find Me. So for them to do the things they did.. Honestly, what Bren said is unforgivable and I don’t know if there’s anything she can do that will redeem her.

I love Romily’s writing style and the unique voices she gives her characters. The plot was truly intriguing and incredibly suspenseful. It was a fast-paced read, too. I basically read it in three sittings. Each time I picked it up, I read a huge chunk of the story – I was so engrossed in it, I just didn’t want to put it down. I loved the revelations at the end and I loved the introduction of the new “bad guy,” plus the set-up for the third book – it was all very ominous and creepy! I also can’t wait for the third book!! I’m really excited to see how everything wraps up and how it all ends.

Romily Bernard is an amazing writer. She’s created an amazing world with incredible characters. The story sucks you in and refuses to let go. I’m excited for Trust Me (the third book in this trilogy), but I’m also excited to see what else Romily does in the future.

Overall, if it isn’t obvious already, I highly recommend this book, this series and this author! If you haven’t read Find Me yet, I suggest you do so ASAP! You’re missing out on an amazing read if you don’t!
