Republic of Debtors: Bankruptcy in the Age of American Independence, by Bruce H. Mann

Debt was an inescapable fact of life in early America. At the beginning of the eighteenth century, its sinfulness was preached by ministers and the right to imprison debtors was unquestioned. By 1800, imprisonment for debt was under attack and insolvency was no longer seen as a moral failure, merely an economic setback. In Republic of Debtors, Bruce H. Mann illuminates this crucial transformation in early American society. From the wealthy merchant to the backwoods farmer, Mann tells the personal stories of men and women struggling to repay their debts and stay ahead of their creditors. He opens a window onto a society undergoing such fundamental changes as the growth of a commercial economy, the emergence of a consumer marketplace, and a revolution for independence. In addressing debt Americans debated complicated questions of commerce and agriculture, nationalism and federalism, dependence and independence, slavery and freedom. And when numerous prominent men―including the richest man in America and a justice of the Supreme Court―found themselves imprisoned for debt or forced to become fugitives from creditors, their fate altered the political dimensions of debtor relief, leading to the highly controversial Bankruptcy Act of 1800. Whether a society forgives its debtors is not just a question of law or economics; it goes to the heart of what a society values. In chronicling attitudes toward debt and bankruptcy in early America, Mann explores the very character of American society.

From Publishers Weekly
This subtle, wide-ranging study examines changing attitudes towards insolvency and their importance to the economy and self-image of the early American republic. Mann, a professor of law and history at the University of Pennsylvania, shows how debtor-relief movements like Shay's Rebellion, a post-Revolution wave of business failures and the need to pay off the public Revolutionary War debt made the problem of debt central to the politics of the new Republic, while the growth of consumer and credit markets enmeshed ever greater portions of the public in debt. A complex imagery of manhood, honor and dependency surrounded the perception of debt in the public mind, while debtors began to invoke the Rights of Man as an argument against debtors' prison. The result, Mann argues, is that by the end of the 18th century insolvency increasingly came to be viewed as economic misfortune rather than moral failure-but only for some. Bankruptcy laws were written to shield wealthy commercial debtors, while broke farmers and workers continued to face prison. Mann examines the political, class and regional antagonisms surrounding the issues of debt and bankruptcy, and draws on newspapers, popular literature and profiles of individual debtors to evoke the complex emotions aroused by debt. The result is an elegantly written blend of economic, political and cultural history that puts in context a problem that is still with us today.

Review
Republic of Debtors is a superb, even dramatic, book about debt, the law on debt, and the experience of debt in the early American republic that reveals how problems over money, credit, and debt shattered lives and transfixed politics as thoroughly in the Revolutionary and early national eras as they still do in the twenty-first century. (Jon Butler, Yale University)

Bruce Mann has given us a superb study of the evolution of early American cultural attitudes towards personal indebtedness and their impact on law and legal procedures. His vivid stories of imprisoned debtors are both eye-opening and instructive. Mann has made a fresh, original, and immensely significant contribution to the history of the Early Republic. (Gloria L. Main, University of Colorado at Boulder)

This is a lucid, deeply researched, and powerfully insightful study of attitudes toward debt and bankruptcy in the "long eighteenth century." In sparkling prose, Mann introduces us to a key aspect of how Americans put their own spin on emergent capitalism while he also addresses the ambivalent legacies of the constitution-framing years. (Cornelia H. Dayton, University of Connecticut)

Writing with clarity, grace and wit, Bruce Mann tells a compelling tale that opens up fresh dimensions of the politics, imagination and nightmares of the founding generation. I emerged with a far better grasp of the complexities of paper money and credit than I ever hoped to have. As we struggle to handle our own credit cards, it is useful to reflect on the deeply ironic relationship among personal independence, personal identity, and personal indebtedness that has long characterized American life. (Linda K. Kerber, University of Iowa)

Readers now owe Bruce Mann a hefty debt of their own for this imaginative and painstakingly researched account of changing ideas of credit, debt, and bankruptcy in eighteenth-century America. Debt is one of those pervasive aspects of society that we take for granted, yet its functions and complications require unusual diligence to master. But mastery of this rich subject is exactly what Mann has gained. This model study contributes at once to the legal, social, economic, moral, political, and intellectual history of early America, while telling an intriguing story of shifting attitudes and relations. (Jack N. Rakove, Stanford University)

Bankruptcy, that familiar constant in an age of boom and bust, has a moral as well as financial component. Deservedly or not, in the early days of the American republic, shame and mistrust attached to a debtor who sought shelter and relief under the law...A fascinating work of economic history that sheds light on daily life in the young Republic. (Kirkus Reviews 2002-11-01)

This new work from Mann...examines the relationship between creditors and debtors during late 18th-century America. He specifically focuses on the transformation of society's view of indebtedness from a moral failing to an economic one...This thoroughly researched work is an excellent resource. (Robert K. Flatley Library Journal 2003-01-01)

In his new illuminating book...[Bruce Mann] identifies a fundamental societal change in attitude toward debtors...He traces the evolution of American attitudes toward debt and insolvency throughout the 1700s, culminating in the first federal bankruptcy law in 1800. (Stephen Smith Books and Culture 2003-04-01)

In this gripping account of being in debt in the land of the free, Bruce Mann illuminates the origins of Americans' ambivalent relationship to business failure...Mann employs his considerable talents to bring to life a world where much that seems normal and logical to us now--like a unified currency, or the fact that you cannot pay off a debt if you are stuck in jail--was not. Mr. Mann's genius is to explain in clear and human terms the legal and economic intricacies by which early American creditors and debtors lived and died. (Evan Haefeli Washington Times 2003-02-09)

Bruce Mann, a noted authority on early American law and society, offers an incomparable study of 18th-century indebtedness and insolvency, tackling a tough subject with clarity and sympathy...Anyone interested in the history of American law and business will find this an enlightening book. (Christopher Clark Times Higher Education Supplement 2003-10-17)

Back [in colonial days] debtors were treated worse than thieves. In prison they had to foot the bill for their own food and heat, or else go without. In 1798, when yellow fever swept Philadelphia, all prisoners from city jails were evacuated to safety--all, that is, but the deadbeats. Bruce Mann, a law and history professor at the University of Pennsylvania, says such harsh treatment reflected a culture in which failure to repay debt was regarded as a moral failing rather than a business one. How Americans' attitude toward debt changed is the subject of Mann's masterful (but largely overlooked) 2002 history, Republic of Debtors. (Bernard Condon Forbes 2004-01-12)

Bankruptcy scholars and conventional legal historians aim to capture [societal and political tensions] by directing their attention to high legal text and their framers' original intentions. But for Mann, such documents serve only as points of reference on a journey whose aim is to understand contemporary cultural conceptions. Mann wisely identifies debtors' prisons, rather than legal texts or political discourse, as the path into his world…Mann uses the correspondence, memoirs, and pamphlets written by inmates to portray not only their miserable daily lives but also their cries for help…The 1800 Bankruptcy Act, amid controversy, narrowly passed. Mann is the first to narrate its passage authoritatively. (Ron Harris American Historical Review 2004-06-01)

A landmark study of eighteenth-century financial failure. (Jill Lepore New Yorker 2009-04-13)

Explains how Congress helped free our founding father from debtor's prison
By S. Wesley
This was bought as a gift for a person who read Robert Morris' Folly, one of the founding fathers and the only signer of all three of our national documents, who was imprisoned later in debtor's prison. The details of what Congress passed in the 1800s to implement our national Bankruptcy laws that helped to free Mr. Morris, were explained in Bruce Mann's book Republic of Debtors. My gift recipient was very happy with this book in helping to explain those missing details.

Whither the Debtor's Prison?
By FrugalDutchman
In the 18th century, the inability to pay debts was considered a moral failure. Mann traces the changing culture of debt around before and after the revolution. After the revolution, insolvency goes from a sin to a risk. Instead of a moral failure, bankruptcy becomes an economic failure. Because debt was so pervasive and common, and was not limited to the poor, the young republic was forced to reinterpret its view of lending and borrowing. In the new economy, failure was possible without punishment. Instead of a classical moral economy, America entered a risk-taking, productive Capitalist economy.

Some of this thinking was already in the works. Cotton Mather, for example, had earlier declared that some debt is necessary and that it is not all sin. In the 18th century as well, Puritans were no longer against usury and they realized that some bankruptcy was the sign of healthy entrepreneurial activity.
Wartime disruptions in the market created debtors. The French and Indian War was in this way a trial run for the revolution. The war created so many debtors that leniency was necessary. Debtors appeals to sympathy for release, or to logic, arguing that house arrest of gaol meant inactivity and no productivity. Debtors fled to the trans-Appalachian West to secure independence. Especially tobacco farmers were at risk of debt. There was great uncertainty about supply and demand with cash crops that were destined for international markets. Overinvestment one year might lead to debt in the next. Yet all states had imprisonment for debt, most Americans assuming that this was a necessary punishment. But as debt redefined from moral failure to economic risk, debtors were put in separate gaols, kept away from other felons.

One's reputation was his credit. In pre-revolutionary society, money was scarce and a common account book in town helped regulate credits and debits. Bills of exchange served as a checking system through a third party. British merchants, however, had to be paid in specie. Notes and bonds transform society. Paper money becomes more common after 1776. And debt from speculation is no longer seen as a crime. Paradoxically, debt was the antithesis of republicanism. Republicans stressed independence and self-sufficiency. But debt created reliance.

Jefferson feared that the Banktuptcy Act of 1800 also could indemnify farmer with debt and take away their landed property. In the 18th century, land was never used to pay debts. The introduction of paper as legal tender injured state collectors who were forced to take in devalued currency. Forced legal tender for private debt was novel and controversial. Currency speculation, land speculation, and speculation in soldier certificates were all common in the 1790s. Although the Bankruptcy Act was overturned, it established precedent for the 19th century.

Compelling and Highly Pertinent
By Douglas Barnes
Bankruptcy is in the air these days, from Enron to overextended former dot-commers. So-called "bankruptcy reform" -- intended to make bankruptcy more difficult and more punitive for debtors -- has been pushed by large creditors for years, and almost passed in the most recent session of Congress.
I'm a first-semester law student. I came to this book with a solid, basic understanding of modern bankruptcy law (gained as a business person and as a legal assistant prior to starting law school). As an undergraduate I took two semesters of legal history, and I have an extensive personal interest in American history.
Despite my background, until I read this book I had no real appreciation of the implications of failing to have an effective bankruptcy law. Focusing primarily on the second half of the eighteenth century (both before and after the American Revolution), Republic of Debtors does an amazing job of showing the social, humanitarian and economic consequences of failing to provide for an orderly discharge of debts in bankruptcy, especially when combined with creditors' remedies such as imprisonment for debt.
I, for one, had never confronted the fact that imprisonment for debt survived so long after the American Revolution, nor did I realize that, aside from some brief experiments, the US did not adopt a set nationwide laws on bankruptcy until the late nineteenth century.
Professor Mann tells the story by drawing on a wide variety of primary materials, including the diaries of imprisoned debtors and documentation of court cases. One particularly interesting chapter deals with the an elaborate form of self-government that evolved within one of the debtor's prisons. As many of those imprisoned were relatively well-educated and had been involved in the movement for independence from England, it was only natural that they would have their own constitution and elected government.
Then, as now, there was a tension between the moral and economic aspects of bankruptcy. On one hand, debtors can be viewed immoral spendthrifts, on the other, as hapless victims of the vicissitudes of a world-wide economy or the bad actions of others. These same tensions underlie the current debate on changes to bankruptcy law, driven by creditors who are seeking a return to a more punitive, moralistic approach to dealing with insolvent creditors.
I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in the modern bankruptcy debate, early American legal history, or social and economic history generally. It is also just a cracking good read.
Cheers!

Successful Test Management: An Integral Approach, by Iris Pinkster, Bob van de Burgt, Dennis Janssen, Erik van Veenendaal

At a time when information systems are becoming ever more complex and quality to market and time to market are critical for many companies, a structured test process is essential. Even more important is a structured test management process to keep testing under control. Nowadays a test manager must have extensive knowledge of and experience with project management, risk assessment, team building, and, process improvement.

Based on their long-term industry experience, Pinkster and her coauthors describe a holistic approach to test management that combines test methods, test management, risk assessment and stakeholder management into one integral process, giving test managers, test coordinators, IT project managers, and QA managers a competitive edge in environments where there are numerous unstructured requirements, tough testing schedules and limited resources.

This book should be in every test manager's backpack!

Review

From the reviews:

"While there are many books in the market about testing, there is a paucity of books on the management of this critical area, so the addition of this one is most welcome. The book describes several test strategies, and how these can be leveraged to manage the test process. The general issues with this, and the problems that occur, are described reasonably well, with graphs and charts, which illustrate not only what occurs, but also how and the reasons why. There is also some information about metrics, and how the highly complex test processes occurring today can be measured....no matter how short your short list of management books to read this year is, this ought to be on that list." --ACM Computing Reviews

"There is a prescriptive element in this collaborative book on a test management approach developed … in the Netherlands: ‘Here is The way to do it. Now do it!’… The appendices are very good, and provide helpful checklists. … There is also a clear expression of the roles commonly thought of in testing … . Read this book with a willingness to ask questions, of yourself, your work situation and of the book. … you will find that the questioning pays off." (Software Testing, Verification and Reliability, Vol. 16 (2), 2006)

AN approach, rather than THE approach
By Mr P R Morgan
This volume is rather prescriptive, giving the LogicaCMG approach to test management. However, there is something in the volume for all, and you do not have to be part of the circle around this firm to get something from it. The proviso is that if you are NOT part of the circle around this firm, you should not possess this as the ONLY book on test management.

I found the introductory chapter rather simplistic, describing the historical testing methodologies that there have been. All of these were found to be deficient, when, over the horizon gallops John Wayne, and the methodology known as Risk and requirements based testing (RRBT). That may well have been true, but "risk" has been a well recognised part of the mainstream testing for a number of years. Therefore, the justification for using RRBT is almost taken as read by the majority of those looking into the volume.

Having said that, there are items that give a different insight in the pages written. This reader found the `quick scan' undertaken at the start of test planning an appealing concept. This stage is undertaken in order to build up what the authors refer to as the `Test management File'. This `file' was not well introduced, and it was some time before it was realised that this is not so much a file, but a method of organising information. A meta-file would be a better way of understanding this. Perhaps something has been lost in the translation from the Dutch.

The chapter on test estimation was particularly helpful, with good sections on why estimates are often inaccurate, what items are often left out of estimates (including `test management', would you believe), and what to do if the estimate, however it is achieved, is not acceptable to the stake-holders or others who are footing the bill. At this stage, if the estimates are too high, there are very stark choices; either risk are addressed, or they are not.

Key elements of RRBT is that testing can stop at any point, and if that were to happen, the BEST tests would already have been performed, giving the best value to the business. Four test types are recognised by the authors, although these do not necessarily relate to test cycles. These test types are the intake test, the basic test, the complete test, and the final test. There is an order of dependency within these; if the intake test is not successful, there is little or no point proceeding.

The appendices are for the most part an excellent source of additional material. Of special note is the roles and responsibilities of those involved in testing. This would be useful in the staff selection process. One point where the supplementary material did break down was in the glossary. This is a little surprising as Erik van Veenendaal is one of the authors, with extensive experience of glossaries. It could be it was felt that a comprehensive glossary was unnecessary - perhaps this should have be stated more clearly (I did not find this sentiment referred to).

The final chapter discusses the transfer activities, and discusses where lessons can and should be learnt from one testing project, to be carried on to other future testing situations. There are other sources of material available on this extensive topic; having said that, the coverage was limited.

So, would I recommend the book to others? My big reservation to those outside the LogicaCMG sphere of influence is that I believe that there is no set answer, no `one size fits all' approach. Thus the answer is "Yes, .................. BUT". Have other sources of material, and question the advice given. Take what is good, and useful to you, and leave other elements. Use the volume to help you answer why you do what you do, by taking a look at something else (i.e. the LogicaCMG approach). It should be noted that some other volumes on `Test Management' also cover, for example, test techniques, which are not within the scope of the present volume.

If you are within the LogicaCMG circle, the decision is clearer - buy!

offers a detailed testing framework
By W Boudville
If you are in need of a disciplined testing approach to software projects, then Pinkster et al might have merit. It is correct, as another reviewer remarked, that the text exists within the context of LogicaCMG. And that perhaps it unfairly deprecates competing testing methodologies.

However, to the extent that something is better than nothing, the book offers detailed steps and metrics that you can evaluate. Some are unavoidably rough, like trying to estimate how long testing will take. But the authors give reasonable suggestions on this and other factors.

Tabletop Machining, by Joe Martin

Tabletop Machining gives the reader not just the "hows" but also the "whys" of machining practices using the lathe and milling machine for metalworking. Included are down-to-earth descriptions as well as detailed photos and drawings. In addition, a large selection of project photos illustrates the amazing work that has been produced by craftsmen using small but capable miniature machine tools. Though the tools used in the examples highlight the small end of the size scale in machining, the theories and practices can be applied to metal working on machines of any size.

Whether you're a newly graduated engineer or a beginning machinist, this book will help you gather some real, practical knowledge of how machines and machinists actually go about working with metal. This isn't theory, but rather it details "real world" practices and gives a good insight into the challenges faced by machinists. Too often, good craftsmen are stopped from venturing forth because the only information available shows just the technically perfect way to do things rather than the simple, practical methods everyone really uses. For those wishing to design and build their first metal parts, it is a perfect starting point, as it highlights the fun that comes from making small projects of precision and beauty.

Review
When someone with Joe Martin's experience in the machine shop begins to draw upon his past and put it into print, one bit of wisdom tumbles out right on the heels of another. The book grew in just that way. What started out to be a substantial book became a monumental one, and it's clearly not limited in its scope to people who own and operate the tabletop-type machine tools such as the Sherline equipment. Machining is machining, and size is for the most part immaterial.

This book is richly illustrated with drawings, diagrams and full color photography. Craig Libuse is responsible for that aspect of the book, and it has added immensely to its usefulness. While the book focuses mostly upon the Sherline lathe and mill in both drawings and photos, the setups and processes it illustrates are important and useful for any machinist with any equipment. I encourage everyone to have Tabletop Machining by Joe Martin in their shop library -- The Home Shop Machinist Magazine, January 1999

From the Publisher
The information gathered for the book didn't come from a college education or a library. It came from a lifetime of experience in the real world of machining. It came the hard way at the expense of busted knuckles, broken taps and scrapped parts. Joe Martin now owns and manages a successful company that manufactures Sherline miniature machine tools, but he started in a small shop with old tools and no money. Being a hobbyist as well, he is familiar with the needs of both the home shop machinist and the commercial manufacturer. He is in the unique position to be able to offer a practical perspective on the equipment and processes of machining at both extremes...from intricate miniature machining projects to full size shop production tools.

Tabletop Machining has been very successful and is now in its third printing. This has given the author the opportunity to fine-tune the copy to the highest level of quality. Any typographical errors found in the first printing have been eliminated.

About the Author
Joe Martin grew up in New England and entered the building trades straight out of high school. He worked on many construction jobs around the country while pursuing his hobby of building and flying radio controlled aircraft on the side. He and a group of friends began the sport of Formula One model aircraft racing and Joe became one of the sport's early champions. His hobby eventually led him from the construction trades into manufacturing where he owned several companies producing products for the hobby markets. While working in that industry, he used a small, borrowed Unimat lathe to help complete a contract to design a joystick to test-fly the lunar lander for NASA. Years later, he came across a chance to become the United States distributor for the Australian-built Sherline miniature machine tool line. He knew it was a well-designed tool that eliminated all the weaknesses of the Unimat he had used before and felt there was a good market for it here. An early contract with Sears got the business off to a good start. He started out importing the machines from Australia, but wound up obtaining exclusive manufacturing rights to the Sherline tool line. In the process, he built a business from a few worn out, used tools in a rented industrial space to ownership of a large factory with over a million dollars worth of state-of-the-art computer controlled production machines.

Joe is still a hobbyist at heart and enjoys building and flying radio-controlled aircraft. The general public may have an image of a model builder as a stay-at-home nerd, but Joe has expanded his hobbies to include windsurfing, sailboat and automobile racing. Never one to be a spectator in life, he immerses himself fully in every job or hobby he takes on. He brings to this book the ability to draw upon many experiences for comparisons. His respect for the achievements of hobbyists and builders has also let him to sponsor contests and a Foundation to reward craftsmanship. That competition over the years has led to an excellent resource of photos of outstanding projects. There are very few people who could combine the photo resources, experience and knowledge he brings to this book.

Great Book!!!

Truly the 'bible', for using one's Sherline lathe and milling machine's...
I've been chasing this book for nearly 10 years and finally found a copy, which was affordable for me. This book will explain everything you need to know to setup and get your lathe running. Joe Martin's text [and accompanying photos] makes it EASY, for us modelers and inexperience 'would-be-machinist', to get our lathes up-n-running. AND Joe make it FUN!.

I'd recommend it to the novice and any newbie, wanting to experience hobby machining - Using a miniature lathe.

Great color photos, great practical advice, well written
By A Customer
This book should be purchased by anyone doing small scale modelling or machining. It focuses on the differences between "big scale" and "small scale."
The author gives freely of his advice. This is not a specific how to each step of any machining operation, but an overall how to. You get lots of advice. And, the book is stunning in it's photo's.
The author gives you recommendations on which tools and accessories to buy, and which vendors he buys from. An example could be the advice he gives on finishing off your part once it's machined. He advises the use of small polishing stones after the piece has been deburred. You'll see pictures of the stones he uses. "I have found a 1/4" square shape the most useful. The end can be shaped on a bench grinder to get into tight spaces. The stone is dipped into kerosene frequently to keep the surface being cut awash with fluid..." This goes on for about 4 large paragraphs.
Then he tells you about finishing off with sandpapers. "I have gotten excellent results with 320A wet and dry sandpaper glued ot small sticks. I buy these woooden sticks at hobby shops and prefer spruce. I glue the sticks to the paper with instant "super glue" and make up a batch of them at one time..." He goes on for several more paragraphs on sandpapers. They he talks about powdered and liquified abrasive polishes, then tumbled finishes. Well, you get the idea.
The last chapter of the book describes how the author started his business and relays all the important lessons that he learned. This chapter alone is worth the price of the book. In fact, you should read what he says about the great value of their internet site.
Again, this book is geared to the smaller scale of desktop machining... not using the big iron. He notes the differences. His comments on CNC, and on craftsmanship, CAD and engineering are also very interesting.
Although all the examples in the book used the company's Sherline lathes, mills and accessories, it was not blatent, nor came across as self-serving.
It's a big format book, paper back, with glossy paper with full color photos on just about every page.
I highly recommend this book. And, my hats off to the author for doing such a remarkable and detailed job.

5 stars if you own a Sherline machine
By ratyoke
I bought this book because I am planning on buying a Sherline mill soon. Like the other reviewer said, this book is more like an extended manual for Sherline machines. Which is why I am giving it 5 stars. If you do not own or plan to buy a Sherline machine I think this book will be of much less interest to you. Maybe look for it in the library or a book store and look through it first and see if its really a book you would want to buy. Remember, the author is the owner of Sherline, so every example is using a Sherline machine. He frequently talks about the different machines and accessories Sherline makes. Despite this, he really doesn't come off as sounding like he is trying to sell his machines. But I may be biased since I had already decided to buy a Sherline mill before I bought this book, so he doesn't really need to sell me on anything.

Its an interesting book, the author talks about a lot more than just machining. For example he talks quite a bit about how his company came to be what it is today. I found this interesting. My only complaint about the book are the examples of work done on Sherline machines. It is almost all model cars, model boats, model planes, or their engines. From what I have read of the author, this is the sort of thing he is interested in, but I wish he could have shown a wider range of things made on miniature machine tools. The work is exceptional, its just I wish there was more variety.

If you own or plan to buy a Sherline machine, its a 5 star book. If you don't own or or plan to buy a Sherline machine, then I think the book is maybe 2 or 3 stars.

Review

"The Lean IT Field Guide answers the fundamental questions posed by so many who read the books, attend the conferences and are inspired by others to transform their own team: Where do we begin? How do we get started? What should our first steps be? Authored by two experienced Sherpas, Tom Paider and Mike Orzen, the book will ensure you will never be alone on your path to truly great results."
―Rich Sheridan, CEO and Chief Storyteller, Menlo Innovations; Author of Joy, Inc. - How We Built a Workplace People Love

"The Lean IT Field Guide is a practical, principles-based, guide to enterprise transformation. Orzen and Paider have great experience in IT―and it shows in great examples that are genuine and really helpful. Their advice applies in any knowledge-work environment, IT or otherwise. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in durable, transformational change in the way their organization works.
―Peter Ward, Sr. Associate Dean, Fisher College of Business, The Ohio State University; Director of the Center for Operational Excellence

"I’m excited about this book because it fills in many of the gaps that we all wanted filled after reading Mike’s first book, Lean IT. It continues the journey of the principles and practices learned through decades of experience, as well as showing concrete patterns that can be applied to technology work.

Like Lean IT, this book focuses on technology value streams that enable the business. Even better, the lessons are equally relevant to any value stream, whether it’s service, manufacturing, healthcare, or other value streams that rely on technology."
―Gene Kim, Co-Author of The Phoenix Project andthe upcoming DevOps Handbook

"This short, readable book is a triumph of clarity, dense with practical advice. There's simply no better work available to anyone looking to kick-start a sustainable lean IT transformation. It provides the necessary tools―and no more―illustrated with vivid, relevant examples, and ties them together into a coherent whole with the bare minimum of theory and exposition. Highly recommended."
―Jez Humble, Co-Author of Continuous Delivery; Vice President at Chef

"By clarifying the main definitions; specifying, step by step, the foundational management skills; and providing many examples distinguishing success from setback, Mike and Tom have written a savvy, smart, and mindful guide to your own lean IT transformation. ... a wonderfully written, lucid, succinct guide to what you need to know to succeed."
―Michael Ball, Bestselling co-author of The Gold Mine trilogy; Three-Time Shingo Research Award Recipient

An IT organizations' field (tested) guide to advance from adequate to awesome, move from meh to marvelous and more
By Martin G. Erb
This book illuminates a path for you and your IT team to travel as you transformation from adequate to awesome, and then to improve continually.

If you do not yet know how a totally awesome IT team thinks and works, you can read some of the books that Amazon has probably kindly displayed somewhere on this web page. Most – if not all - were written by Mike Orzen and/or one or more of his colleagues.

When I read those books, I realized how much time I, my IT teammates, and my employers have wasted in the 40 years I have been an IT professional. I thought about the gaps between what we had done and where we could have done. Then I tried to imagine what it would take to transform any organization – and perhaps especially an IT organization – from its "as is" adequate to an awesome "to be", I had little guidance beyond old sayings like, “A journey of a 1,000 miles begins with one step.” Not much help.

Now, Mike and Thomas have described in plain english (and a little transliterated Japanese) a path that you can take get you there, and handholds to keep you from going back. They have made the transformation and have seen it being done in IT and in other organizations. Buy this book. It will cost you much less than 15 minutes of a consultant's time. The time spent reading and thinking about what you are learning how you will use it will be priceless. My copy has so many pages turned down it is almost twice as thick in that corner!

The Lean IT Field Guide is a map to move from meh to marvelous and more!

P.S. The subtitle should not be taken literally. It is only figuratively a roadmap. There are no roads, and the speed one can maintain on this journey is likely closer to foot traffic than to mechanized locomotion.

This book contains the missing roadmap and practical guidance on how to translate Lean knowledge into results
By Troy DuMoulin
In the Lean community there is a wealth of good books, which explain the theory, tools and thinking models related to creating customer value. However most organizations struggle with how to take these principles and apply them in a practical and progressive manner. As stated by the Author’s “It is easier to practice your way to Lean thinking vs. thinking your way to Lean practice.”

This book contains the missing roadmap and practical guidance on how to translate Lean knowledge into results. It provides the reader with a clear and logical approach on how to adopt Lean beliefs, practices and behaviors in any organization. As a Lean IT instructor, I recommend this book as a must read for anyone who has an initial understanding of what Lean is and now is looking for a way to successfully take this knowledge an apply it to IT Value Streams.

Not just for IT...
By Jeffrey Burke
Don't let the title fool you. Though the content is written from the perspective of IT, it's principles and guidelines are applicable to Lean deployments across any business function. It clearly defines Lean methodology and provides a practical guide to ensure that business leaders are approaching Lean implementations systematically with the "team" in mind. Rather than just telling you the "hows" of deploying Lean, it goes further into explaining the "whys." This dual approach enhances the experience and facilitates greater understanding of what a Lean transformation is and how it can enhance organizational success.

The True Guide to Genuine Happiness: Never Guess or Doubt Again!, by Dalibor Ivicic

If there is one aim that all people have in common, it is our personal happiness. Everything we do is inseparable from this aim, because all our actions and thoughts gravitate toward it. With your personal happiness as the main objective of this book, you will find practical ideas that will help you not only to define this aim, but to make it a reality. The following is an outline of those ideas. HAPPINESS MEANS DIFFERENT THINGS TO DIFFERENT PEOPLE. Besides good health, financial security, harmonious relationships, etc., every one of us needs something specific to satisfy our nature and make us completely happy. Without it, we can have everything else and still not be content. How to recognize and satisfy this unique aspect of your character can be found in this book. KNOW YOUR STRENGHTS AND WEAKNESSES. Bad habits, wrong people, a limiting environment, and so on, are some of the weaknesses that we all have in one form or another. Until we identify and remove these negative elements from our lives, they will keep us from realizing our dreams. At the same time, we may be overlooking some of our strengths that can be the highway to our fulfillment and happiness. The chapter on self-analysis will help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and the subsequent chapters will help you work on both. ONLY YOU KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU. Any advice on living that is not in accord with your natural tendencies is likely to be misleading. The purpose of this book is not to tell you what to do, but to increase your self-knowledge and make it the basis for all your decisions and actions. THE TRUE GUIDE TO GENUINE HAPPINESS WILL… • Begin with your self-knowledge • Focus on what is most important to you • Bring out the naked truth • Help you establish balance in your life • Increase your understanding and appreciation of the world • Remove guessing and time wasting • Bring peace and joy into your life

About the Author
Finding truth and seeing things as they are, not as they appear to be, has been my passion most of my life. I have always believed that unless something is based on truth, unless it leads towards truth, or unless it is truth itself, it has no value. I see ignorance, particularly ignorance of truth, as the worst human affliction. Beginning my biography with these words may not be what most people would expect, but I think that revealing this aspect of my character will say more about me than if I talk about anything else. This part of myself I value the most since it is the core of my character and a true expression of who I am. My concern is how truth affects human lives, that is, how much better life can be if we are led by truth rather than by any other guiding principle. Stated differently: are we happier and better when we are guided by our base impulses and self-interest or by our hearts, when we live by expediency or by honesty, when we follow fashionable but false standards of other people or when we follow our inner guides. Most of us understand or feel what is the right thing to do, but too often we go against truth. I wrote a book only to make truth more obvious. Although I mention myself only briefly in my writing, those who take time to read my book will have a fairly clear picture of who I am as a person. The ideas I express there say all that is important about me. I was born and grew up in Croatia and then I moved to the United States in 1999. I enjoy reading, writing, hiking and laughing. I live with my wife in Phoenix, Arizona.

'Never guess or doubt again!'
By Grady Harp
Dalibor Ivicic has one of the most ingratiating manners of writing and that serves his topic of helping his readers find the way to happiness. Reading his book is like chatting with your closest friend - who just happens to be enlightened! He opens with a discussion of `happiness' - the various meanings it has for different people depending on personal philosophy and goals. Or as he states, `Any advice on living that is not in accord with your natural tendencies is likely to be misleading. The purpose of this book is not to tell you what to do, but to increase your self-knowledge and make it the basis for all your decisions and actions.'

He divides his book into instructional settings: Self-Analysis - Know thyself, Discovering your ideal vocation, What is an ideal vocation?, Do I have talents?, Recognition of talents and improvement of skills, Self-analysis questions: Live Your Own Life - Be true to yourself, Conformity, Goals; Postpone Gratification -Las Vegas - a shortcut to all dreams, To take a laptop or to take a book? - the question is now, The quick gratification epidemic, The lure of a predator, The joy of anticipation; Overcoming Difficulties - The price of overprotection, The importance of directed thinking Imaginary problems, Cinderella Mary, Sickness, The death of a loved one, The optimist; Take Your Life With a Sense of Humor - Go home and come back tomorrow, The cheerful warrior, The magic of laughter; Manage Your Resources - Time, How to apportion time and make every hour count, The mind, The benefits of learning, Material resources/ money, General guidance for money management, If you make a resolution, make sure you stick to it, Generous versus selfish; Enjoy Your Life Here and Now - Can you talk to flowers?, What do you look for in your world?, Escaping the present, Gratitude; Physical Health - Think healthy, Physical activity, Healthy diet, Let's cook something, A good night's sleep ,Duke's way; Mastery of Emotions - Our emotional heritage, Anger, Subtle fear, Overcoming fears, Worry, Other emotions; Harmony With People - Who laughs first?, You are wrong, Falsehood and dishonesty, A sincere friend, Genuine interest in people versus aloofness; Natural Laws - No pain, no gain, Whatever you sow, so shall you reap, and Universal change.

Dalibor them presents a very significant list of Self-analysis questions - and this section alone is worth the time to read this book. While there may be no earth-shaking new ideas here, it is the manner in which Dalibor takes us through his book that makes all the difference. Grady Harp, December 14

Well written
By Dean S. Lewis
The True Guide to Genuine Happiness provides an in depth look at how to be happy. It looks at the different aspects that can contribute to ones happiness eg. work, choices we make, and more. The author does not stop here, but goes a level deeper to shedding light on recognizing your talents and improving them. Of all the great points that the book has, the part on talents stood out for me. This book had me look at my life and to make choices that can lead to more happiness, health and abundance. One I am recommending my friends to read.
