Disappointing Modernization of a Legend
By tvtv3
In this graphic novel version of the legend of King Arthur from Tony Lee & Sam Hart, Arthur isn't just a regular mortal man, but instead is part fairy and is chosen by the good fairies to be King of Albion (England). However, his half-sister, Morgana, is taken by the evil fairies and raised in the black arts. She comes to despise Arthur and all that he stands for. Unlike many of the stories we read about Arthur, in this version he is fully aware of his familial lineage. However, he begins to doubt the existence of the wizard Merlin until Merlin appears just before Arthur sets off to face the evil King Ulrich. Merlin sends Arthur away to the good fairy realm of Albion where a year is as a few hours in Albion. While there, Arthur falls in love with Vivianne, the Lady of the Lake. He ends up staying in Avalon for two years before returning to face Ulrich in Albion, where only a day has passed. Thus begins Arthur's journey to becoming King.

I had been looking forward to reading EXCALIBUR: THE LEGEND OF KING ARTHUR. I enjoy the legends of King Arthur and was excited to see how this updated version would be. I was disappointed. I don't mind trying to update the stories of Arthur. However, EXCALIBUR does more than just update the stories. It changes the very essence of Arthur. Instead of the man who would be king, he becomes the fairy man that's destined to be king. The mystery (and humor) of some of the tales are explained away through faire knowledge (aka magic). Arthur's love for Guinevere and the betrayal of Lancelot and Guinevere are easily forgiven because in this version of the story, Guinevere was not really Arthur's true love. That's just one example of how the Arthur legends are distorted.

I was also disappointed by the artwork. I had seen Sam Hart's work in an earlier graphic novel, OUTLAW: THE LEGEND OF ROBIN HOOD. In that book, the illustrations were much too dark. The illustrations in EXCALIBUR are better than in OUTLAW and there isn't as much shadowing and dark colors as there was in that book. However, the expressions and physical positions of the characters in EXCALIBUR are bland, dull, and often emotionless. EXCALIBUR is supposed to be an exciting updating of the Arthur legends, but it's difficult to become excited about a story when one of the most exciting panels is seeing a withered Arthur after part of his "life force" has been taken from him by an evil fairy. There is so much more of the story, but the illustration don't do the story justice.

Overall, EXCALIBUR is a disappointing update of the King Arthur legends. The story suffers from giving the tale a fairy subplot and the actual graphic novel itself suffers from mediocre illustrations.

The once and future king
By wogan
This graphic novel tells the tale of Arthur, as a boy living with Ector, until Arthur's death. Despite the title of Excalibur, the sword most think of as Excalibur is called Caliburn, in this version - the name the sword was known by in stories before the sword was called Excalibur. Excalibur comes in later on, in this story`s recounting.
There are many accounts of the legend of Arthur; most of this recounting concerns the faerie realm and not that of Camelot and Arthur`s rule is only touched upon. There are some elements and characters not well explained or transitioned into; but the story is sound. The love between Lancelot and Guinevere is included.
The illustrations are not colorful, more in monochromatic colours to depict moods and time of day.

Some versions of Arthur have been sanitized into Disney versions, this is not. It is not for the very young, but those who like to read varying versions of Arthur's story, especially that pertaining to the Land of Avalon, Morgana and the Faerie realm would enjoy this .

Good (but not perfect) version of the Legend in a wonderful format
By IGS93
This comic tells Arthur's story, from his dark origins to his final rest in the Faerie Realm of Avalon. The illustrations are very good, I love how each color had a diferent purpose: red/orange for the battle, violet/purple for supernatural scenes... The graphic aspect of this comic has 5 stars from my point of view. The narrative is also good, but weaker than other versions of the Arthurian Legend.

This is not a traditional version of the Arthurian Legend. Of course, some of the traditional subplots of this myth show up (the Sword in the Stone, the Green Knight, Lanncelot's love for Guinevere...) but a lot of them are slightly changed to create a good, solid story: for instance, it is not Merlin but the dark fairies of the Unseelie Court who change Uther into Gorlois, but when they ask for Igraine's child as a payment, Uther gives them his step-daughter Morgana Le Fey, who lives a horrible childhood with the Unseelie Court and will take revenge on Arthur and Merlin for this (say goodbye to Malory's story of Morgan learning magic in a nunnery). Some aspects should have been better developed (Mordred's hostility towards Arthur is clear, but in traditional accounts he's more treacherous and sibylline... And for all the Gods what happened to Igraine after Arthur's birth? Did she die or something?)
Of course some subplots are made up by the writers, for instance, Arthur's love for Vivianne (The Lady of the Lake, here she is different from Merlin's lover Nimue), Uther's death at the hands of his friend Ulric... But, in my opinion, the most innovative contribution is the idea thar behind Arthur's fight for Albion (that means Britain) there is an endless war between the good fairies of the Seelie Court (Vivianne, Nimue, Bran the Blessed... Supporters of Arthur) and the Unseelie (bad fairies, Morgana is their main representative). This last idea is very similar to The Mists of Avalon, where there is a struggle between the Christian Faith (Guinevere) and the Pagan British Religion (Vivianne and Morgana), but here we've got a Faerie War.

Overall, I must say that despite some little aspects (I didn't like when one of my fauvorite characters died) it is a good version of the Myth, under those capes of colour, magic and glamour lies the old story of love, war, friendship betrayed, hatred and, at the end, forgiveness. The story has more magic than ever, but it doesn't loose its humanity.
I give 5 stars to the graphic aspect, and 3.5 to the narrative... 4 stars, all in all.

“One of the most remarkable prose stylists to emerge from the noir tradition in this century.”
–Stephen King

“Hard-boiled horror, pulp noir vampires, decaying urban souls– you’re gonna need a shower after this one. . . . [Huston] kicks down the door of horror.”
–Fangoria, on Already Dead

There’s only so much room on the Island, only so much blood, and Manhattan’s Vampyre Clans aren’t interested in sharing. So when the Vyrus-infected dregs of New York’s outer boroughs start creeping across the bridges and through the tunnels, the Clans want to know why.

Bad luck for PI and general hard case Joe Pitt.

See, Joe used to be a Rogue, used to work off his own dime, picked his own gigs, but tight times and a terminally ill girlfriend pushed him into the arms of the renegade Society Clan. Now he has all the cash and blood he needs, but at a steep price. The price tonight is crossing the bridge, rolling to Coney Island, finding the Freak Clan, and figuring out what’s driving that bunch of savages to scratch at the Society’s door. No need to look far. The answer lies around the corner in Gravesend. Convenient, all those graves.

From uptown to the boardwalk, war drums are beating. Murderous family feuds and personal grudges are being drawn and brandished, along with the long knives. Blood will spill and, big surprise, Joe’s in the middle. But hey, why should this night be different from any other?

Sunset to sunrise: put off a war, keep your head attached to your neck, and save your girl. Check. Joe’s on the case.

Praise for Charlie Huston and his Joe Pitt novels

“In conceiving his world (a New York City divided by vampire clans, each with different reasons to hate Pitt), Huston gives a fading genre a fresh afterlife. [Grade:] A.”
–Entertainment Weekly

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Huston's third Joe Pitt vampire novel (after Already Dead and No Dominion) takes his Manhattan-based hard-boiled hero on a dangerous trip into the undead communities across the bridge in Brooklyn. The various vampire clans in New York are on the brink of conflict. Leadership has fallen apart, and to make things worse, a Van Helsing is running amok and has recently murdered a longtime supplier of contraband blood. Worst of all, Pitt's AIDS-stricken girlfriend, Evie, is in the hospital failing fast. Once again, he's faced with an almost classical dilemma: infecting her with the vampire virus will destroy the illness that's killing her, but she'll be a vampire. Sent to Brooklyn to meet with a rogue clan of carnival freak vampires, Pitt ends up battling a group of radical Jewish bloodsuckers called the lost tribe of Gibeah. As always, Huston's formidable writing chops are on full display: his action scenes are unparalleled in crime fiction and his dialogue is so hip and dead-on that Elmore Leonard should be getting nervous. ''One of the most remarkable prose stylists to emerge from the noir tradition in this century.'' --Stephen King

''[Huston] creates a world that is at once supernatural and totally familiar, imaginative, and utterly convincing.'' --The Philadelphia Inquirer

Jewish vampires ... Oy vey! Who knew?
By W. V. Buckley
In this, the third Joe Pitt mystery, Charlie Huston gets his blood-drinking anti-hero out of Manhattan ... but not far. Just over the bridge into Brooklyn.

Sent by his boss in The Society, the liberal/progressive/politically correct vampire clan, to meet with a clan called Freaks, Pitt finds himself in the middle of a shootout featuring a clan of Jewish vampires. If all this sounds over the top, then you don't know Pitt.

Huston has a gift for hard-boiled action and that hard-boiled action gets turned on its head when you consider that most of Huston's protagonist have fangs and super strength. Huston isn't afraid to dabble in some blood-drenched, graphic violence. But in scenes with Evie, Pitt's AIDS-infected girlfriend, he's equally at home with tenderness and the frustration that comes from watching a loved one sink further into death. Throughout the series Huston has had Joe Pitt wrestle with the issue of whether to infect Evie with the "vyrus" to cure her AIDS ... or would turning her into a vampire be a worse fate than AIDS? That issue gets resolved in Half the Blood of Brooklyn, though not in a way you might be expecting.

If there's one thing Huston does consistently well, it's building a vampire society that never fails to fascinate. From the corporate-style Coalition, to DJ Grave Digga's crew uptown in Harlem, to the hippie-ish Society and all the other vampire groups, Huston can make you gasp and laugh in equal measure. His various clans are a topsy-turvy take on modern society with generous amounts of blood and gore tossed in.

out of the frying pan into the fire
By Erin Satie
Well, kids, the gloves are off. Sure, ALREADY DEAD and NO DOMINION were pretty tough books - lots of heartless jockeying for power, lots of bones breaking, a few corpses at the end of it all - but by the end of HALF THE BLOOD IN BROOKLYN those were the good old days.

First of all, Joe's taken a job with the Society. It's the safe way to go, but Joe just isn't cut out for that kind of teamwork. His pride has suffered - and so have his morals. He's back to being a hired gun, and for the first time we see him killing indiscriminately. The bodies pile up fast.

Second of all, Evie is dying. She's physically a wreck, and she's not all there mentally, either. The crisis we've seen coming for the past couple of books has arrived: Joe has to let her die, or try to save her by making her a vampire. Naturally, things don't go as planned.

Meanwhile, Joe's sent across the river to Brooklyn. The Society is reaching out to the boroughs for allies and they've found a rag-tag band of carnival freaks who need support. They find out why soon enough: a clan of conservative Jewish vampires is well on its way to owning Brooklyn, and the circus freaks are getting in the way. Sounds simple enough - but when the Coalition and the Society are both involved, everything is complicated. Wheels within wheels.

I read with my heart in my throat for most of the book - too anxious about what would happen next to put it down for even a minute. The ending is definitely a cliffhanger - and I look forward to finding out what happens next.

Not Up to the Huston Level
By Mark Goodwich
I love Charlie Huston's Joe Pitt series, but I do not think this one was as good as the 2nd book. I will go on to read the 4th in the series hoping it improves. I will not go into the story-line, many other reviews have already done this so I will just rate the book on its elements (0 to 5 being highest):

Protagonist Development: 4
Antagonist Development: 3
Minor Character Development: 2 (you have to know them from the other 2 books)
Storyline: 3
Setting: 2
Theme: 3
Writing Style: 5 (this is what keeps me coming back to Huston)
Overall Rating: 3
