Granted, if you're looking for very specific or in-depth guidance, you may find this book too cursory and general in its approach. But if you're looking for a thumbnail guide to the basics, it'll do you just fine.

Not Bad, Could Be Better

This is not a bad overview for a newbie project manager, but it tries to cover a lot of ground in a small area so essentially each point is only given a paragraph or two. Because of this, not much context is provided or a discussion of various situations that may arise. This is much more like one version of the "what" and not much of the "how".

More for the scholar, than the casual reader

This book paints a picture of an extraordinary man from a culture markedly different from current day American culture. I admit that I don't know much about the Edo period in Japan and thus most of the names of the people that Mushashi encountered during his life meant little to me. I suppose to truly appreciate the man you need to understand the times and the culture in which he lived. I came away with a sense of who Mushashi was, but much of the Zen Buddhist philosophy was lost on me. I felt there was quite a bit of unnecessary repetition of his character in the book. I got the point that his Way was to empty his mind of everything but the task at hand and to live fully in the moment. He lived a wanderer's existence with no care to acquisition. He had no formal education and yet was very well educated and accomplished in the arts in addition to being an undefeated swordsman. I feel this book was more geared toward a student of Japanese history and culture, than just the curious reader who wanted to know what made Musashi so special and revered.

About the Author

Thomas R. Baechle, EdD, CSCS,*D (R), NSCA-CPT,*D (R), is a professor and chair of the exercise science department at Creighton University. He is a cofounder and past president of the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), and for 20 years he was the executive director of the NSCA Certification Commission.

Baechle has received numerous awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the NSCA and the Excellence in Teaching Award from Creighton University. He has more than 35 years of experience competing in and coaching weightlifting and powerlifting and presenting and teaching on these topics. Baechle has authored, coauthored, or edited 15 books, including the first and second editions of Fitness Weight Training, four editions of the popular Weight Training: Steps to Success, and three editions of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning, all published by Human Kinetics.

Roger W. Earle, MA, CSCS,*D, NSCA-CPT,*D, has over 25 years of experience as a personal fitness trainer, competitive sport conditioning coach, and behavior modification facilitator for people of all ages and fitness levels. He lectures at national and international conferences about designing personalized exercise and training programs, weight management, and exercise motivation. Previously, Earle was the associate executive director and the director of exam development for the NSCA Certification Commission, where he was responsible for reviewing and editing the CSCS and NSCA-CPT exams and writing study resources with Baechle, including coediting the first edition of NSCA's Essentials of Personal Training and the second and third editions of Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning.

In addition, Earle coauthored the first and second editions of Fitness Weight Training and the third and fourth editions of Weight Training: Steps to Success. While at Creighton University, Earle served as the head strength and conditioning coach and a faculty member of the exercise science and athletic training department.

Workout guide that helps you achieve your personal training goals

There is a lot to like and appreciate about Fitness Weight Training. The first thing I noticed was that you have many options as to the equipment you can use. Such equipment as strength bands and fitness balls are included. I use these almost exclusively and most books ignore them. And the book includes alternative exercises as well.

The workouts can be done in the gym, on the road or at home.

One of the best things about the book is that it's designed to meet the needs of those who are seeking one of three things in their weight training:

Muscle toning
Body shaping
Strength

Then the book helps you determine your current fitness and exactly which program you should follow. And it then lays out a program designed just for you, including the intensity that is right for you.

The photos and instructions are excellent and the book is laid out well. Unlike many fitness books, there is an index that allows you to quickly look up a special workout or exercise or information you need. What's more, each workout includes a warmup and cool down and shows you exactly what to do and for how long.

One of the hardest parts of fitness and strength training is determining what exercises to do for what part of your body. And how long each exercise should take and how long a break should be. This book totally eliminates that problem. You'll know up front how long a workout will take. It's really very complete and will be of value to anyone of any fitness level.

Excellent For Beginners and Pros Alike

Giving five stars for five reasons:
1. Uses easy to follow instructions for each exercise and blends them into a great workout routine. (gives samples of workouts)
2. Excellent resources to ensure both novice and trainer can benefit from the information presented.
3. Covers everything from muscle toning, body shaping and strength training with clear color coded zones (defining level of ease/difficulty and intensity) so you can achieve your health goals at your own rate/pace.
4. Plenty of work out exercises and routines to chose from -- follow what they have suggested for you or blend them together for your own routine.
5. Ran the book by certified fitness trainers received two thumbs up from all of them. (I needed to be sure everything was safe and clear for use.)

This text gives the weight trainee/fitness enthusiast some of the most detailed information for a variety of goals and interests. The book does not scrimp on extras such as color photos and charts. Each step in the training progression is well laid out from the novice to the advanced trainee. All aspects of the process from equipment to time commitment are well illustrated. You will not find a better book for the price in this field.

About the Author
Charles E. (Ed) Harris, Jr., received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Vanderbilt University, having had an undergraduate major in biology and minor in chemistry. He is Professor of Philosophy and Sue and Harry Bovay Professor of the History and Ethics of Professional Engineering. His publications are primarily in applied ethics and engineering ethics.

Michael S. Pritchard is Willard A. Brown Professor of Philosophy and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Ethics in Society at Western Michigan University. His areas of teaching include ethics (theoretical and practical); the philosophies of David Hume, Adam Smith, and Thomas Reid; and the philosophical thinking of children. His publications are in the areas of ethical theory, practical and professional ethics, communication ethics, and philosophy for children. He is co-editor (with Elaine Englehardt) of TEACHING ETHICS, the official journal of the Society for Ethics Across the Curriculum.

Michael J. Rabins was active in ASME and other volunteer organizations on engineering ethics issues. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, and ended his teaching career at Texas A&M University. He helped establish a course in engineering ethics in 1989 that is now required of all engineering majors. Professor Rabins died in 2007.

This is a poor textbook.

I used this textbook to teach an introductory engineering ethics course. I am about to teach the course again, and I will not make the mistake of using this book for it.

The main problems with this book are the poor writing and its poor organization. The chapters seem like they were cobbled together from the lecture notes of several different people. The topic changes without any clear reason (and sometimes without warning). Ideas are introduced then forgotten. Theories are mentioned but then not given any systematic treatment. I certainly would have expected the exposition to be more refined by the fourth edition.

Here are some of the many general problems with this book:

- Some of the chapters are not thematically unified.

- Often remarks and even definitions are stated in imprecise terms.

- Some parts of the book read like a draft of a review of the scholarly literature, sometimes mentioning obscure (at least from the standpoint of an introductory text) articles and books.

- Sections lack clear focus and direction -- starting off on one topic, meandering to other topics, and never returning to the original topic.

- The index is poor and unreliable.

Here are some more specific problems:

The case studies at the end of book are not presented in any uniform manner. Sometimes they are short blurbs. Sometimes they provide in-depth analysis. Sometimes they are sketches of hypothetical scenarios. And in two cases the "case studies" are just brief descriptions of videos about engineering ethics. It's not really clear what the authors intend the battery of case studies to provide.

One particularly bad "case study" -- purportedly about the Hyatt Regency walkway disaster -- begins "Approximately 4 years after its occurrence, the tragic 1981 Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkway collapse was in the news again." And it goes on to describe a court ruling about the disaster. So, one might think that the original disaster was discussed somewhere else in the book. The index points you to page 28 where there is one short paragraph and a footnote. The footnote points you to a discussion that appears in the 3rd edition of this very same book (now in its 4th edition). No kidding.

Their section on the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster is just as frustrating. The authors begin their analysis of the case without first clearly laying out the relationships between the parties involved. For instance, they do not provide a clear description of the relationship between Morton Thiokol and NASA; so the reader has to figure it out as she goes along. And they don't say which party employed the whistle-blower Roger Boisjoly. That's pretty inexcusable in the context of a chapter called "Engineers in Organizations."

Finally, even their treatment of basic normative ethical theory is poor. In chapter 1, in the section called "Three types of Ethics or Morality" they break down moral evaluation into three categories: "common morality", "personal morality", and "professional ethics". None of these includes what is typically the main strand of normative ethics: Substantive moral claims taken to have objective standing. Granted this main strand is not the only way to understand the nature of thinking about moral matters, but it is far too central, common, and traditional to ignore.

This textbook is frustrating both for students and for their teachers. Not recommended.

Great ethics book - for more than engineers

This book is designed for engineers, but the book can apply to more than an engineer. I have taken an ethics course from two of the authors of this book. The cases presented in this book apply to real world situations(some altered slightly), not just some clearly fictional situations. There are many fundamental tools that help you determine the type of situation you are dealing with -- ex. moral, factual, conceptual. Afer the problem is determined there are tools to help you make decisions, such as creative middle ways. The author does not make you adhere to their ethics, but a general ethical standard. Overall, this book provides very good ways to determine and solve issues; case studies are also provided to give you an opportunity to "test" yourself.

Like her, he knows that history often provides a far richer cast of characters than any novelist could invent. Chief among them is Edmund Morel, a young British shipping agent who went on to lead the international crusade against Leopold. King Leopold of Belgium, writes historian Adam Hochschild in this grim history, did not much care for his native land or his subjects, all of which he dismissed as "small country, small people." Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. When he eventually found a suitable location in what would become the Belgian Congo, later known as Zaire and now simply as Congo, Leopold set about establishing a rule of terror that would culminate in the deaths of 4 to 8 million indigenous people, "a death toll," Hochschild writes, "of Holocaust dimensions." Those who survived went to work mining ore or harvesting rubber, yielding a fortune for the Belgian king, who salted away billions of dollars in hidden bank accounts throughout the world. Hochschild's superb, engrossing chronicle focuses on one of the great, horrifying and nearly forgotten crimes of the century: greedy Belgian King Leopold II's rape of the Congo, the vast colony he seized as his private fiefdom in 1885. Until 1909, he used his mercenary army to force slaves into mines and rubber plantations, burn villages, mete out sadistic punishments, including dismemberment, and committ mass murder. The hero of Hochschild's highly personal, even gossipy narrative is Liverpool shipping agent Edmund Morel, who, having stumbled on evidence of Leopold's atrocities, became an investigative journalist and launched an international Congo reform movement with support from Mark Twain, Booker T. Washington and Arthur Conan Doyle. Wow, I'm never taking my tinfoil hat off now.

I was assigned this book for class and ended up greatly enjoying it! It kept my eyes open even when I wanted them closed. I'm still appalled at the events that occurred in the Congo and even the cover up behind it. Ask yourself this: Why have I never heard of this? Despite millions of people of dying, millions experiencing human brutality and sadistic mistreatment, lands ravaged for resources, and cultures disappearing, it is still swept under the rug. This book is a prime example of why we should keep curious and never take anything at face value. Wow, I'm never taking my tinfoil hat off now.

I recommend this book

I recommend this book. The only drawback was that there were frequent cases of interjecting suppositions about persons' motives, thinking or other non-provable details, but his writing style and the vast amount of historical detail were quite good. He includes the story of Stanley and Livingstone. I did not know Stanley had this large a roll in the whole unfortunate series of events in the colonialization of Africa. The historical events covered here were the basis for the plot line in the new movie Legend of Tarzan.

This a piece of history that colonial powers would like to stay hidden. The beginning is a little slow as it lays down back ground of the major characters. It eases into its purpose ; an expose of horror and slavery of the inhabitants of the Congo.
