A modern re-imaging of a mythological classic
By Neko-san
If you have any doubt (like I did), the New Mythic Tarot is a box set which includes the New Mythic Tarot (78 cards) and its Companion Book. The New Mythic Tarot is a remake of the now classic Mythic Tarot. This time around is Giovanni Caselli who provides the art for the creation of Juliet Sharman-Burke and Liz Greene. I was pleased with their successful Sharman-Caselli Tarot so I welcomed a Sharman-Burke and Caselli teaming up for this remake. However, the more realistic imaging approach to this remake will undoubtedly cause some disappointment to fans of the classic Mythic Tarot.

The layout of the cards in the New Mythic Tarot remains the same as in the original Mythic Tarot. This is, bordered pale yellow, with title on top and a black line above and bellow the illustration. The card themselves are of average quality, and not as good as Lo Scarabeo's.

The Major Arcana are devoid of numbers, a nod to the Visconti-Sforza Tarot. As in the Sharman-Caselli Tarot, the order of the Major is presented as follows: The Fool, The Magician, The Empress, The Emperor, The High Priestess, The Hierophant, The Lovers, The Chariot, Justice, Temperance, Strength, The Hermit, The Wheel of Fortune, The Hanged Man, Death, The Devil, The Tower, The Star, The Moon, The Sun, Judgement, and The World. Of these, I like the most the Hanged Man, showing Prometheus tied upside down to a cliff, and an eagle flying his way, and also The Wheel of Fortune showing the Fates, handling a thread of life and a spin wheel, with four people climbing around.

The Minor Arcana are fully illustrated. The Pips tell a story per suite: the legend of Eros and Psyche (Cups), the story of Jason and the Argonauts (Wands), the story of Oreste (Swords), and the story of Daedalus (Pentacles). The Court Cards are populated with mythological figures such as: Narcissus (Page of Cups), Queen Penelope (Queen of Wands), Odysseus (King of Swords), and King Midas (King of Pentacles).

Throughout the New Mythic Tarot, Caselli's imagery remains close to the original, although his depiction of people and scenery is more realistic. Most of the time, the artwork seems to be painted watercolors on hand-made drawings. However, some images seem to be enhanced with some Photoshop. For example, the cloud formation in some cards like The Chariot seems to be "too perfect" when compared to the rest of the imagery. And the cups in the suite of cups seem to come from a clip art collection. This mixture of artistic media may be OK if it were applied consistently. However, this is not the case.

To really enjoy this deck you would need to use the companion book a lot. This book starts with an Introduction: The Origins of the Tarot, and The Mythic Tarot. Then continues with The Major Arcana, The Minor Arcana and Reading the Cards.

The Major Arcana are given three pages, including a description of the card, a full image with written explanations at each side, and further explanation with sections "On An Inner Level" and "On A Divinatory Level" of the card.

In the Minor Arcana, the Court are given three pages, while the pips are given two. These follow a similar layout as for the Major Arcana with two exceptions: the Court cart include only the section "On A Divinatory Level" while the Pips include only a section "When the appears in a spread".

The last section (Reading the Cards) includes recommendations on how to use the cards and only two layouts: The Celtic Cross Spread, and The Planetary Spread. The layouts are explained with sample spreads.

I have to admit that (regretfully) I passed on the original Mythic Tarot when I still had an opportunity to buy it. I was put off with the original artwork. At the time, I didn't realized how in tune was Tricia Newell's art with the mythological theme behind the Mythic Tarot.

Overall, I liked this tarot deck a lot, but the inconsistencies in the art detracted from my enjoyment a bit. This is a deck for tarot collects who like Greek Mythology (of course) and would be willing to open up for a modern re-imaging of the classic Mythic Tarot.

Love These! Had Originals, And These Are Very Close To Originals!
By Carol
I used to have the Original Mythic Tarot! This one just came today and I am delighted with the artistic work and the size of cards. The Bok is larger than the one I had before and really full of accurate , and wonderfully written explanations. So thankful I ordered this one! This helped the pain of loss from my, original ones.

It's the same
By kmcorby
I bought the Mythic Tarot when it first came out in the 1980s, and lost that deck to Hurricane Katrina. So I was curious when I saw the "New" Mythic Tarot. It was a chance to replace a classic deck, and see a new interpretation.

But I have to say that the "New" Mythic Tarot is hardly new at all. The cards have been redrawn by a different artist, but they hew extremely closely to the originals, even to the minute shadings of color in the skies, and the awkward anatomical poses of the characters. I think I prefer the original art, which had a charming naivete. I'm puzzled as to why Casselli, the new artist, felt he had to replicate it so closely. Why bother?

Now, if you don't already have a copy of they Mythic Tarot, it is an excellent Tarot. Interpreting the cards throught the lens of Greek mythology works really well. I recommend it.

But if you do already own the Mythic Tarot, there is no need to purchase this new edition. It brings nothing new to the table. As far as I can tell, the bulk of the text in the companion book is exactly the same too.
